Smoking population dying out
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 09:23 PM by onehandle
Source: New York Post

A Citigroup analysis of the tobacco industry indicates there may be zero puffers in 30 to 50 years' time. The research was based on declining smoking rates in Britain. Currently, only one in five Americans lights up, down from almost one in four a decade ago.

Even though the decline among American smokers is at a standstill now, "it is quite possible that there will be no smokers left in Britain or many other developed countries in about 30-50 years," the report states.

Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control says.

The number of smokers in New York City declined by 19 percent from 2002 to 2006, recent CDC data show.

(On edit, they are obviously talking about not only today's smokers, but the Habit Itself.)

Been to California lately? The parking garages there have warning labels, because they contain cars, which contain carcinogens. I am not joking.

33. They won't be claiming that the victim picked up someone else's
chewing tobacco and ate it. They won't be saying that the victim worked for 20 years around dozens of nicotine patch wearers.

How many children and babies are smoking cigs right now? (because they are in a room or car with a smoker). Cancer sucks.

15. I don't know if they still have it for the States, but I'd like to know...
why do we still allow duty-free cigarettes into Canada? The government taxes the shit out of them here and then lets anyone coming in bring a carton of smokes tax free.

19. Overall it will take longer.
There will be countries that will continue to be tobacco strong. While countries like the US will be virtually smoke free sooner than 30 years. That will because more and more states are restricting smoking locations and slowly taxing it to death. Tobacco companies will see it as too much effort to sell in the US as each state enact laws that make it difficult. Those states that are strong on tobacco growing will lose the incentive to protect tobacco growing.

I rarely encounter smokers. And more likely to see smokers while they are in their vehicles. Even then there are much fewer than there use to be.

38. Smoking rates among Kids/HS/College students?
Maybe but it hasn't been my observation. It seems that smoking rates among college grads was lower during the past than what I have observed in recent years.

Apparently the campaign to find 400k+ new users every year isn't doing that badly.
