Senate: No state funds for No Child law (Maine)
Senate: No state funds for No Child law
Tuesday,April6,2004,10:04 AM

AUGUSTA (AP) -- Maine lawmakers have given their final approval to a measure that seeks to bar the use of state money to comply with the federal education mandate known as the No Child Left Behind Act.

The resolve, which the Senate passed Monday, authorizes Maine's Education Department to determine the state's cost to comply with the 2001 school-reform law. It allows Maine to comply only to the extent that federal funding allows.

The bill sponsor, Sen. Michael Brennan, says it also it makes clear that Maine's own school-reform law, Learning Results, is the state's top priority.
