After more than three weeks of searching, volunteers sorting through garbage at a Nebraska landfill found the body of a newborn baby, just days before authorities had planned to call off the search.
"Everybody's prayers were answered, I guess," said Leonard Gill, owner of L.P. Gill Landfill, where crews have been working since March 11. "It's a big relief."
About 20 searchers were at the site when someone found the infant's remains Monday, Gill said.
The search by nearly 300 police officers, firefighters and other volunteers was launched after Union County, S.D., Sheriff Dan Limoges said he was told March 9 that an infant had been born and placed in the garbage.
