Navy to relieve officer during inquiry over lewd videos
Source: NBC News

Capt. Owen Honors commands the USS Enterprise and produced the videos while second in command aboard the aircract carrier

NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy officer who aired lewd videos for crew of an aircraft carrier will be temporarily relieved of his command as early as Tuesday, Navy sources told NBC News on Monday.

Capt. Owen Honors commands the USS Enterprise and produced the videos while second in command aboard the aircract carrier.

He is to be relieved while the Navy investigates the incident.

Made in 2006 and 2007, the videos just came to light over the weekend and show the crew got an eyeful on shipboard TV: Gay slurs, suggestive shower scenes and mimicked masturbation.

The Navy said Sunday it will investigate the "clearly inappropriate" videos shown through the nuclear-powered ship's closed-circuit television system as part of an onboard movie night.

WHAT was he thinking?
How could the commander of the Enterprise engage in such salacious activity?

13. Let's not dignify this military bs with phony honorifics to the brass.
Capt. Honors has an irreverent sense of humor, which is GREAT in a stuffy institution like the Navy.

26. the point was that his boss condoned his"humor" as the commander -
he should be a part of this investigation

there was no attempt to dignify anything - just clarifying the post.

2. Good call. It was definitely 'behavior unbecoming an officer'.

And I've noticed that most article mention the gay slurs, suggestive shower scenes and mimicked masturbation - but they leave out the part about the 'nude rectal exam' that is at the end of the released video.

I wonder how many more of the videos will surface before this is over with.

p.s. I've been thanking God the past two days that the videos were made during the Bush administration and not under Obama :)

9. Lighten up. The guy has a sense of humor.
A lot of it is self-deprecating. He is the opposite of every pompous self important officer who ever bullied his crew. America should be glad to have a guy like this in a position of authority in the military. I wish there were a million of him.

16. ONE is too many.
An officer in the Navy should NOT be filming/approving faux masturbation and nude rectal exams.
If he wants to do that kind of crap he can resign and do it as a civilian.

21. Um, Let me think a min.
Not only no, but FUCK NO.

This is the judgment you want in charge of a nuclear reactor, millions of gallons of fuel, armaments of all descriptions (even though it is US Navy policy to neither confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons on board any ship) so a nuke is relatively unlikely but within the realm of possibility.

The man should be summarily dismissed just for showing his junk.

22. the issue is not whether or not the video was funny.
a sense of humor and a tendency to offend are two different things.
sure, there's some overlap, but an officer must avoid offending first and find humor elsewhere.

i had the privilege of serving aboard a destroyer and found great camaraderie, much humor and very funny people at all ranks, and never saw a single instance of offense. it's not hard, actually.

if don rickles or joan rivers or sarah silverman or andrew "dice" clay offends someone, they can just walk out or change the channel and find entertainment elsewhere. that's not nearly as easy to do when you're serving aboard a navy vessel. and even most of these offensive comedians know enough to tone it down when they're doing an armed forces gig.

12. What did this guy do to arouse your homicidal anger?
He made some gag videos, which provide some welcome relief from the tension and boredom of life aboard ship. And for that he deserves to be dropped in Afghanistan? Your sense of humor and sense of proportion are out of whack.

19. LOL. yes just a little fun with the guys. Just some "gag videos" among the guys. No reason to over
react. Just because he is supposed to represent us and defend the Constitution, no reason not to let him have some fun at the expense of the gay community. So what if it is bigoted.

Listen Dick head, your "sense of proportion are out of whack". You are not welcome here.

20. I've seen the same bullshit attitude directed at women in the military.
My best friend was assaulted at Tailhook and had to put up with the "boys will be boys" mentality because of lack of real leadership. Now it's directed at the gay community. Screw 'em, he's got too much time on his hands if he's making movies, pretending to defend our country on a floating city. Put him where the real conflict is.

4. I don't understand how someone w/such poor judgment
could attain that level of command in the military. They must be scraping the barrel.

10. Why do you take military pomposity so seriously?
It's nothing but a scam to "dignify" mass violence.

23. i've not seen anyone here say an officer shouldn't ever crack a joke.
the judgement is in knowing which jokes are appropriate and which jokes aren't.

24. No, for being a prejudiced jerk who finds his 'humor' in vilifying
probably 10% of his crew. Talk about 'conduct unbecoming'.

18. Dunno on this one: It's a different world. However, the gay-bashing is...
Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 11:21 PM by Poll_Blind
...pushing this over the line. About 10% of those sailors are statistically going to be gay or lesbian. Why ridicule and/or mock ~10% of your serving crew?

No one would accept anti-Semitism, racism. Why accept this? This is not the ferry to Nantucket, it's The Enterprise a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Being a Captain in the Navy is a huge fucking deal.

I'm interested to see how this turns out.

I'm also...interested in the timing of the release because now that DADT is dead, it would seem as though this video (because it's not new, from 2007-ish) might have been leaked by someone who felt the captain was jeopardizing the battle-readiness of his crew by mocking a certain percentage of them.

25. what?
Edited on Tue Jan-04-11 01:23 AM by Nossida
Excuse me Citizens, but this seems rather punitive.
The Captain can only be considered a good
Man, until an investigation proves to the
contrary. He is the "Captain" aboard one of
the finest ships in the U.S. Navy after all.
He didn't get to the position being a fool.

Why should he be dishonored 'before" the facts are certain?
I can only consider he being "relieved while the Navy investigates the incident",
a crass over reaction.

He is the Captain of a War Ship, not Chaplin of a Church.

(my 2 cents)

... especially if you skipped the words "inquiry over" due to speed reading ...
