(CNN) -- Five new governors take their oaths of office Monday, helping to usher in a new balance of power in statehouses across the country.

Democrats are taking over from Republicans in California and Minnesota, while the GOP is seizing the reins in Wisconsin and Wyoming. One Republican is handing over power to another in Nevada.

Republican chief executives, meanwhile, will kick off their first full terms in Arizona and Utah. Another Republican begins his second full term in Idaho.

Across the country, Republicans and Democrats alike are take charge at a time characterized by dire economic circumstances, and they are being forced to confront severe budget shortfalls in the wake of a steep economic downturn.

The new governors sworn in today are in: California (Jerry Brown, Democrat), Nevada (Brian Sandoval, Republican), Wisconsin (Scott Walker, R+Tea Party), Wyoming (Matt Mead, R), and Minnesota (Mark Dayton, D). I just finished watching Brown's inaugural ceremony online.

Other new governors who began serving this year were in New York (Andrew Cuomo, D) and New Mexico (Susan Martinez, R). Tomorrow, the new governors of Florida (Rick Scott, R+Tea Party) and Rhode Island (Lincoln Chafee, independent former Republican) will be sworn in.

1. Census redistricting in Wisconsin and Florida looks to be a slog fest...
Great to see Brown's swearing in. Personally, I'm feeling better with CA politics than I have in a long while. I'm hoping Brown hits the ground running - he's obviously no newcomer to the ins and outs of Sacramento.

2. Crap Wisconsin and Florida have been taken over by the tea party.
In Wisconsin we have already lost thousands of jobs.... The incoming crowd is getting ready to cut Social Security.... They hate birth control, and the poor... I can't wait for the report that was hidden about Scott Walker's zero dollar budget for targeted buildings that needed work and killed a young boy last summer comes to the for front..... The next Governor is going to have a Michigan state like decay on her/his hands.....
