Magnitude 7.1 - ARAUCANIA, CHILE

WASHINGTON — A major earthquake of 7.1 magnitude hit central Chile Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was initially reported as a 7.2 but was then revised downward.

The epicenter was 60 miles northwest of Temuco at a depth of 20.5 miles, it said.

"No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical and tsunami data," said the Hawaii-based Tsunami Center.

Chile, the world's top copper producer, has seen its economy surge on the heavy spending to rebuild cities ravaged by a quake in February last year and record prices for its main export.

16. No, the 8.5 was on February 27, 2010. The end of February.
Then there were many aftershocks over the next months. The ones of 6.5 and 6.7 the middle of March were especially strong.

I know these things because I was there.

What an experience!

10. Same as it ever looked

Make my own judgment about what? People's general ignorance about the prevalence of seismic activity?

Yes, I have made my own judgment. Most people are downright stupid on the subject.

15. Try this map

There were multiple signs. Earthquakes are just one of them.

So, you can relax...However, if you are a TRUE BELIEVER you should be jumping for joy at the possibility of the "END TIMES", correct? Or, am I missing something?

To be honest if every earthquake on that map was 7 or higher it would not make me think the Bible or any other mythology was real...Earthquakes are simply a natural occurrence here on planet Earth.

12. The Pacific Plate
is hopping. On the other side (Vanuatu), there were quakes over 7.0 in the past few days. And this one was only about 8 miles deep. I think 20.5 miles deep is not shallow. But I'm not a geologist.

13. Shallow quakes cause more damage on the surface...
Deep earthquakes (300-700km) cause less surface damage, by the time the waves reach the surface they are weaker.
I'm not a geologist either, but I am a geek. :)
