Julian Assange Given Press Freedom Award
Source: CBS News

Romanian News Site Honors WikiLeaks Founder for Exposing Some Governments' "Duplicitous Behavior"

A Romanian online publication known for its editorial independence is honoring Wikileaks founder Julian Assange for his service to press freedom, which it warns is under threat in Eastern Europe.

Cotidianul.ro said Saturday Assange was given the "Free Dacia" award for exposing the "duplicitous behavior of some democratic countries."

(snip)
Cotidianul.ro said press freedom remains fragile in Eastern Europe, where a Hungarian media law allows for journalists to be taken to court and fined of up to $1 million (€760,000) for reports considered to be unbalanced.

1. I hope he keeps getting awards and being named
as person of the year and any other such honors. It will make it that much harder to take him down.

3. Agreed. Not to date myself, but the whole world's watching.
The gov't will pursue a strategy... probably as yet undetermined... that takes this fact into account.

30. Is this the same Julian Assange who is interprets the fact, that the first amendment of the US
Constitution applies to the states, as representing a further concentration of power?

.... after World War II, during World War II, the federal government of the United States started sucking the resources to the center, and the power of states started to diminish. Interestingly, the First Amendment started overriding states' laws around that time, which I see as a function of increasing central power in the United States ...

24. Assange is a hero. Exposing corruption, lies and murder is a heroic deed.
Defending liars and lies is not.

33. O_O
kinda odd I had a small argument with my normally left wing uncle, he didn't see any problem with the leaks, but he won't hear anything about the guy because of the false rape accusations. as in he really believes they were raped. Thats pretty much debunked about 4 ways from Stalin. But it caught me off guard. However I'd rather that than a name caller on du with nothing to back up his statement. :(

4. From a "Romanian online publication" ???
What the hell is that supposed to mean. Romania.....bastion of press freedom?? Give me an f-ing break.

If he gets an award from "rapist times" then I hope this goes away. If not, then we should hope for awards that ACTUALLY mean something.

Are we really going to celebrate THIS ??? !!! Yikes.

25. Wikileaks HAS received other awards, but I think this one
has far more significance than some of the more 'popular' awards we are familiar with. No on knows better the value of a free press than those who have been deprived of it.

Interesting that you would denigrate the efforts of these people who are all too familiar with what it means to not be able to speak out against government wrong-doing.

My heart goes out to them and I find it appalling that anyone in this country would attempt to minimize their efforts to bring freedom to all the people of the world, simply because they do not have a big name behind them or they don't have lots of money.

These are the kinds of people who throughout history, actually changed the world for the better. And I have a feeling that getting this award from them will mean as much, if not more to Julian Assange than any of the more prestigious awards he and/or Wikileaks have received so far.

19. ironically, a lot of right wingers i know believe he did a good thing - but

some of this stems from the fact that they consider this a thorn in Obama's side, not 'their' president's problem. But I was actually surprised to hear they thought the information that was released should be known by the public. Go figure.
