Elections officials estimate the crowd at 750, not including anti-Bush protesters, who were cheered by the fall-off in supportRalph Nader's latest presidential campaign was hit with a stunning setback Monday night in Portland when he failed to turn out enough supporters to qualify for a spot on the Oregon ballot in the fall.
Despite drawing large crowds here in previous campaigns, Nader did not attract the 1,000 Oregon voters needed to place his independent candidacy on the ballot.
The 70-year-old consumer activist and his campaign organizers portrayed the failure as a temporary setback and said they were confident he would eventually get on Oregon's ballot.
But Nader critics who picketed the event at the Roseland Theater in Portland's Old Town said they hoped it showed that Nader was losing support among those voters anxious to see President Bush defeated this year.
