Early Logan travelers are opting out of Opt-Out Day
Source: Boston Globe

Erin Ailworth, Globe Staff

Early morning travelers at Logan International Airport are mostly opting out of National Opt-Out Day, an event thought up by a Virginia man to protest airport security measures that include a digital body scan or a physical pat down ...

Logan is expecting more than 107,000 passengers today, about 20,000 more than on a typical Wednesday - and about 770,000 for the eight-day period that runs through Monday.

Those travelers will have to cope with stepped-up security measures such as body scans and pat-downs. Logan currently has 17 full-body scanners, at least one at every major security checkpoint. Security measures were recently expanded after an attempt by a man to bring down a Detroit-bound plane last Christmas with explosives hidden in his underwear ...

New York, Atlanta Airports See No Impact from Scanner Protest
By Mary Jane Credeur and Juliann Neher
Security checkpoints at major U.S. airports such as New York’s LaGuardia and Atlanta operated normally on a day when 2 million Thanksgiving holiday fliers will provide the biggest test yet for new body scanners. LaGuardia workers “haven’t seen any evidence” of slowdowns from passengers who request pat-down searches rather than scans, General Manager Thomas Bosco told reporters today ... Security lines at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were less than 20 minutes at the main checkpoint and 10 minutes or less at other entrances, which is better than most Monday mornings ... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-24/scanner-uproar-shadows-holiday-travel-as-2-million-cram-into-u-s-airports.html

The Morning Plum
By Greg Sargent
Right's attack on TSA invasion of privacy going bust? It appears the American people aren't in sync with Drudge or Rush Limbaugh, whose latest rant is: "Keep your hands off my tea bag, Mr. President." A big majority of flyers, 71 percent, tells Gallup that a loss of personal privacy from body-scans and pat-downs is worth it in order to prevent terrorism. And that's even though a majority say they would be "bothered" or "angry" about getting a pat-down. But: While the right's attack on the pat-downs is laughably hypocritical, it's still fair to ask whether we should be so willing to sacrifice civil liberties and privacy rights in the face of incohate fears of terrorism ... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/11/the_morning_plum_138.html

3. Airports see few delays despite planned protests
NBC News and news services

CHICAGO — Airports nationwide reported few major disruptions early Wednesday despite a loosely organized campaign dubbed National Opt-Out Day that urged air travelers to boycott the controversial full-body scanners at security checkpoints.

No serious disruptions were reported at any major airports early Wednesday. On the East Coast, airports in Washington, D.C.; greater New York; Boston; Richmond and Norfolk, Va.; and Harrisburg, Pa.; reported security delays of less than 15 minutes. At Baltimore-Washington International, there were no waits and only four travelers opted out of the full-body scans. In Denver and Tampa, Fla., airport security waits were under 20 minutes.

Marisa Maola, TSA security director, said there have been "no signs" of a protest and some security lines are actually shorter today than in previous day-before-Thanksgivings. "We haven't had an unusual number of people opt-out of the back scanner X-rays," Maola said ...

4. Security Theater or Security - this is not just a rw idea - these are just plain WRONG
I was against the patriot act and this is not good for us

http://www.freelancetourist.com/security-theater-or-security

When the gentleman from San Diego stripped to his biker shorts to avoid being molested again, he was told he had to put his clothes back on. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local-beat/Passenger-Chooses-Strip-Down-Over-Pat-Down-109872589.html?dr It is obvious from a visual perusal of his body that he has no explosives or other devices on him. If this was REALLY about security that should have been enough. This is no longer about security it is about sexual assault, molesting and power.

Same story another writeup http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40314284/ns/travel-news/

A pretense of security.

If you require a machine to see someone naked, or sexual assault renamed Enhanced Pat down, then having someone striped down to their biker shorts allows that same view without molestation. IF this was REALLY about security passengers should be allowed to strip down to underwear in order to NOT be molested.

9. How right you are. I was hoping to see massive delays today, people missing flights, plans
disrupted...

I was hoping that REAL Americans would have gummed up the system so bad that maybe they'd have to cancel all travel today. Alas, fucking SHEEPLE do what they're told. Mind you, I WOULD have been RIGHT THERE on the front lines, making the most fuss and probably assaulting TSA employees, but I had no where to fly to. That's a good thing for the TSA folks, I can tell you. I would have shown 'em what for.

FUCK THE MAN!

10. This is about the Patriot Act.
And if the teabaggers are against it, FINALLY, then that's great. The more the merrier. (These teabaggers really have no idea where they stand on ANYTHING, it seems to me, or at least, they have no idea WHY they're mad. They're just mad.)

I am against the body scanners because I don't think that the government has the right to see me naked, unless I commit a serious enough crime to warrant their suspicions.

Is flying a right or a privilege? It's a privilege until I buy the ticket, but once I've laid my money down, it becomes a right. They are going to have to go through patting me down and me making clowns out of them, when I fly, because I will not submit to that naked body scanner, or the ionizing rays it puts out.

14. To judge from today's WSJ, it's all about making TSA look bad before a unionization vote

How to Make Air Travel More Infuriating
If you think TSA is dysfunctional and unpopular now, wait until it unionizes.
By JOHN FUND

As millions of Americans travel to be with family on Thanksgiving, many will encounter the Transportation Safety Administration's new full-body scanners and pat-down searches at airports. Complaints are piling up and a new Washington Post poll finds 50% of Americans say the pat-down searches "go too far" in violating civil liberties.

But if you think TSA is dysfunctional and unpopular now, wait until it unionizes. This month, the Federal Labor Relations Authority ruled that 50,000 TSA personnel will be allowed to vote on whether or not to join a union with full collective bargaining rights. The American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union are already gearing up their campaigns to win over the screeners ...

Airport lines move smoothly despite warnings
MICHAEL TARM
The Associated Press

CHICAGO - The lines of Thanksgiving travelers moved quickly and smoothly at airports around the country Wednesday morning despite an Internet campaign to get passengers to gum up the works on one of the busiest days of the year by refusing full-body scans.

The Transportation Security Administration said very few passengers opted out. And there were only scattered protesters at some airports.

After days of tough talk on the Internet and warnings of possible delays, some passengers decided to go to the airport especially early , and were pleasantly surprised by what they found.

Retirees Bill and Margaret Selfridge arrived three hours early at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport for their flight to Washington. But it took only 10 minutes to get through the checkpoint at 8 a.m. ...

12. No Opt Out protests, delays over body scans at PBIA; travelers focused on getting to destinations
By Ana M. Valdes

WEST PALM BEACH — ...

As traveler traffic begins to pick up at Palm Beach International Airport this morning, so far, few, if any have seen delays as a result of issues with body scanners or pat-downs.

In fact, many seemed resigned to the controversial scans or searches just to ensure that they make it to their destination on time.

"My concern is to get home," said Herbert Angloria Kireger, who was getting ready to catch a flight to New York this morning with his wife, Gloria.

"I think those who are making a big deal out of the scanners are ridiculous," the Lake Worth resident added. "Security is good." ...

13. Travellers opt out of Opt-Out Day
Sarah Millar
Toronto Star

Instead of delays due to protests making headlines on Opt-Out Day, the biggest news as of noon Wednesday was a video taped the day before of a passenger going through airport security in his bathing suit.

The protester, named Jimmy, went through security at Salt Lake City International Airport in a bathing suit with “Screw Big Sis” written on his back. The video was posted on YouTube on Wednesday.

Jimmy stripped off his clothes in security while videotaping the whole experience. What is apparently an airport worker can be heard off camera telling him to put a shirt on ...

19. TSA Scanner 'Opt Out' Day Has Trouble Getting Off The Ground At LAX
By Simone Wilson, Wed., Nov. 24 2010 @ 10:02AM
Categories: Transportation

All major news sources this morning are clawing at whatever mangled corpse is left of the TSA hype. Today was supposed to be national opt-out day -- and still could be, of course, once the straight-laced early-morning travelers give way to rambunctious noon-flight types -- but so far, passengers have been chickening out and just letting TSA employees X-ray their junk anyway.

Come on, people! Whatever happened to the kilt-with-no-underwear spirit? Your country needs you now. No, you do not have places to be. Don't pretend you're in such a hurry to see smelly Uncle Richard that the opt-out just isn't worth it anymore. For all of us behind a desk today, put your pat-down where your mouth is and let freedom ring! ...

21. Security lines moving smoothly at D/FW Airport
12:27 PM CST on Wednesday, November 24, 2010

By ERIC TORBENSON / The Dallas Morning News
etorbenson@dallasnews.com

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport lacked drama Wednesday morning as security lines were short, flight delays non-existent and upset over enhanced screening techniques hard to find.

Don Bellew of North Richmond Hills gathered his boarding pass and identification before stepping into the airport checkpoint Wednesday on his way to Los Angeles. His attitude toward scanning machines used by the Transportation Security Administration mirrored that of most fliers.

“It’s not like they’re making a porn movie,” Bellew said as he traveled with his wife Susan to visit their son ...

... A feared protest of the Transportation Security Administration's new body scanning and full-body pat down procedures seemingly never materialized as lines at the security checkpoints in Terminal 1 flowed swiftly Wednesday morning. Opponents of the procedures were urging passengers to forgo the full-body scans that provide security personnel with images of anything hidden under clothing and demand the pat down. The pat down process can take minutes, while the scan takes less than 30 seconds, TSA officials have said ...
