Solomon Ortiz concedes Texas House race (TX-27)
Source: Politico

>>>Democratic Rep. Solomon Ortiz has conceded to Republican Blake Farenthold, handing the GOP an upset victory in the race for the South Texas seat.

With local election officials completing their manual recount of votes cast in the Corpus Christi-area 27th District race, Ortiz trailed Farenthold by nearly 800 votes.

Ortiz called Farenthold at 8:04 p.m. CST Monday to concede the race, according to a statement from Ortiz’s campaign.

“Although I gained votes during the manual recount, I did not surpass my opponents lead,” Ortiz said in the statement. “Therefore, with great respect and admiration in the Democratic process, I congratulate my opponent, Mr. R. Blake Farenthold, in his election to the 27th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.”>>>

9. A lot of states, including blue states like California, also have big budget deficits.
It's not fair to single out Texas.

8. Sadly, yes
The mild controversy over that picture a couple of weeks before the election was the first time I even heard much of anything about this race. Still a little shocked the dude actually won...

12. This was the biggest upset
Larry Sabato's Chrystal Ball listed 105 Democratic seats at some risk.

He sorted them into likely Dem, leans Dem, tossup, leans Rep, likely Rep.

Overall, he was pretty accurate.

Of all the seats that switched, this was the only one that wasn't even on his chart as one of the 105 possibilities.

15. Wow
Sad that *this* seat would be the one to end in such an upset. TX just seemed to be trending more Repug than even I expected (and I tend towards the pessimistic side) this year. I was thinking Bill White would at least lose by only single digits statewide, and he ended up losing by around 13 points. There really weren't any major bright spots that I can think of in my state this year.

16. What is going on in those pajamas? He looks like he's got something
strapped to his stomach. On the bottom left? At first I thought it was a hand, but there don't seem to be pockets. He's definitely got something in there with him.
