TSA chief: Screening may evolve
Source: Politico

Heeding a sudden furor, John Pistole, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, said in a Sunday afternoon statement to POLITICO that airport screening procedures “will be adapted as conditions warrant,” in an effort to make them “as minimally invasive as possible, while still providing the security that the American people want and deserve."

<snip>

Pistole’s statement to POLITICO modified his vow a few hours earlier on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the procedures were "not going to change." Both President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said over the weekend that the administration was continually looking for ways to refine the screening to make it less intrusive and frustrating.

11. I'm guessing they're going to de-evolve and we're going to go back
to racial profiling.

16. Honestly, what's wrong with scientific profiling?
Based on any aspect, be it race, age, nationality, language, religion, profession, disability, etc.

All human emotion removed: If certain factors place certain features higher than others, you screen for people with those features.

Anything else is just dumb, a gross misallocation of resources that give a higher chance of a bad guy getting through.

To flip it on its head for a stereotype:

An executive criminal ripped off a corporation for billions in a stock scam. I have limited investigative resources, and I am presented with two people, which one of the following do I decide to investigate more?

A: The rich 50-something white guy Ivy League graduate in a suit

B: The poor 20-something black female high school dropout with cornrows

Is it racial profiling to go after A?

Should I put equal investigatory resources towards B to make sure I'm not being racist?

20. Because you ignore all the signs that will lead you to picking up crew cut
white men out of the line.

It's all on the radio waves and on t.v. The conservatives would not mind another disaster before the next election.

So you include white men with crew cuts along with all us dark-skinned Mediterranean looking types (which in this country includes latinos) and I will support your scientific profiling.

31. You're going on emotion
That's the point of valuable scientific profiling.

You let neither politically correct considerations nor prejudices affect it.

Scientific, not based on a hunch or political considerations or hurting someone's feelings.

26. Except profiling is not done scientifically
It's done by people, people who for the most part are not "trained professionals," people who like all other people carry their biases to work with them, people who, for a large part, enjoy the fact that they have authority over others, even if just by a smidge.

Further, profiling makes the assumption that because you look similar to known criminals, that you are therefor more likely to be a criminal, yourself.

In your example, would you stop every white guy over 20?

2. What Pistole was thinking:
{pure speculation, of course}

"We're going to modify the crap out of this thing. We'll start by only scanning those who sent nasty emails to the TSA. Obviously, they have something to hide, so we're going to start profiling that group. All others can skip the scanner and pat-downs."

Yeah, that's what he's talking about...:shrug:

Fire them both. Obama needs to fire a lot of his advisors: Gates, Geithner come to mind.

9. Yes, evolve it back to pre 9/11, and put some real training. No nude-o-scopes
in emphasis of profiling - Israeli style.

I'm serious. They should know what they are looking for.

And using the intelligence that they have. Daily. Hourly.

This knee jerk response to everything is tiresome. The Israelies conquered the mystery of Airport security years ago.
