Florida woman diagnosed with cholera
By the CNN Wire Staff
November 17, 2010 3:15 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A woman who recently returned to Florida from Haiti has been diagnosed with cholera, the Florida Department of Health announced Wednesday.

An outbreak of the disease in Haiti has killed more than 1,100 people there, health officials said.

"We have laboratory confirmation that it is the type of cholera spreading in Haiti," said Florida Department of Health spokesman Rob Hayes. "This is not a major public health concern, but we're on top of it," he added.

.....Florida's Department of Health also noted that the superior U.S. infrastructure minimizes the risk for fecal contamination of food and water, limiting the potential spread of the disease.

Person-to-person transmission is rare, it added.

5. Cholera case in Florida is no cause for alarm, officials say
By Mary Forgione, Los Angeles Times
November 17, 2010|5:40 p.m.

Cholera poses big risks in places with poor sanitation and little access to clean water. That’s why Florida health officials say there's little cause for alarm over the first cholera case reported in their state since the deadly outbreak in Haiti.

A South Florida Sun Sentinel story says the state confirmed Wednesday that a woman returning from a visit to Haiti had been hospitalized with cholera. "We don't anticipate we will see any transmission as a result of exposure in Haiti in Florida or anywhere else in the U.S. … because our water and sanitation system minimizes the risk," Dr. Thomas Torok, a disease investigator with the state's health department, said in the story ...

6. Because we have such good sanitation in the US (sewage treatment plants,
municipal water supply treatment), this case of cholera is merely of medical interest and not a public health threat.
