Australia wins U.S. correction on airline threat

CANBERRA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The United States has corrected an advisory that warned Australia could be the target of a September 11-style attack, an official in Canberra said on Friday.

Canberra was annoyed last week when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security named Australia alongside the United States, Britain and Italy as possible targets for suicide airliner assaults by the radical Islamic al Qaeda network.

The government and security experts acknowledged that intelligence suggested Australia could be used to launch airliner attacks on another country -- but flatly denied there was any information that Australia could itself be a target.

Following a week of discussions, the Homeland Security Department issued a correction to its advisory, admitting it misread the intelligence, an Australian official said.
