GOP blocks pay equity measure in Senate
Source: Associated Press

Senate Republicans have succeeded in blocking a measure designed to reduce wage disparities between men and women.

The 58-41 vote to take up the Paycheck Fairness Act fell short of the 60 needed to overcome GOP opposition.

Civil rights groups, labor leaders and the Obama administration all supported the bill, which would make employers prove that any disparities in wages are job-related and not sex-based.

Republicans and business groups said the bill would expose employers to more litigation by removing limits on punitive and compensatory damage awards. . .

All it would have done was restore the law to the way it had been before the horrid U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2009 that, as the New York Times said at the time, "the 5-to-4 decision disregarded legal precedent, longstanding practice and the plain reading of statutory language. It rewrote the rules for litigating age-discrimination cases in favor of employers, which will make it harder for those with legitimate claims of age discrimination to prevail in court."

The 60-vote cloture rule strikes again. Awful stuff.

1. More reason to use the nuclear option now
and re-enact it in Jan with the new senate rules.

Fuck the 60 vote cloture.

I'm sick of it.

6. Doesn't the new GOP House get seated in early January?
so even if the Senate acts under new rules, this bill is unlikely to pass the new House.

10. I agree.....DO SOMETHING
This is the perfect time, in a sea of lost opportunities, to create a firestorm. EVEN IF THEY HAVE TO PRETEND to be outraged, like the Repukes do all the time. Stand on the steps of the Senate and get fucking angry! Tell the American people just what the Repukes did to women with this block. They should have done it with every anti-middle class, pro Wall Street move those bastards make as well. You know that if it were reversed, and it was the minority Democrats blocking a move to remove a wage equality clause off of some legislation, the Repukes would be screaming bloody murder that the minority party wants to kill small business and turn the country into a socialist utopia.
