Republican election win fails to excite public: poll
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - The Republican Party may have excited conservatives when it recaptured the House of Representatives in last week's midterm elections but a recession-jilted public is less than enthused, according to a poll released on Thursday by the Pew Research Center.

The poll of voters and non-voters alike found the subdued mood stood in contrast to that found after the 2006 mid-terms, when the Democratic Party regained control of Congress, and the 1994 midterms when the Republicans did the same.

The survey found that 48 percent of those polled were happy with the Republican victory.

This compared to 60 percent who said they were happy in 2006 when the Democrats regained majorities in both branches of Congress and the 57 percent who applauded the historic 1994 midterm gains for the Republican Party that saw them take control of the legislature for the first time in 40 years.

1. The republicans did NOT win because the public was enamored or enthused with them.
They won the seats they did because the public is dissatisfied with the Democrats. If the absolute truth be told, the American public is not overly happy with either party.

3. Well
those millions and millions of dollars pumped in from varies sources that paid for ads to assist varies republicans also played a part there, if not for that I really doubt the democrats would have lost as many seats as they did.

5. Who knows what Repugs actually "won" ... we're still voting on computers .... !!!
How nuts can the American public be?

Obviously all our elections show that the public wants to move to the LEFT --

they want Social Security protected and MEDICARE FOR ALL --

I don't see any Americans who want the world turned upside down again --

But right now as Obama continues to make abundantly clear we have one right wing party

and one radical right wing party --

We need a Plan B!

7. a similar thing could be said about 2006
The Dems simply failed to make many real changes... like bringing war criminals to justice. They were then given another chance by having control over the two partisan branches of government. After making a few decent changes, radical things failed to happen again.

Sad as it is, most American voters - like most people - have the horrible combination of being overworked and undereducated. They feel like the only choices they have come in general elections and that those choices are between R and D without even considering much substance beyond "I don't like what's going on now, so I might as well try changing something". Of course that never works, so we're eternally fucked unless something major changes.

32. I'm not disputing that.
The trouble is that the dems didn't do enough to stimulate the economy, and many people who can't/don't pay attention to politics don't understand why we're in the mess we're in right now, so they just voted for something else, even if it would make matters worse.

33. It also revises history. When Bush took office, the Senate was
split 50-50. Bush had the VP to break ties, but only through May 23rd because Senator Jeffords became an independent on 24 May 2001 and voted for Democratic Senate Control in return for Chairmanship of the Environment & Public Works Committee. The Senate remained under Democratic Control until after the 2002 election.

Bush then had a Republican House and Senate until the 2006 elections gave control of both houses back to the Democrats and that lasted through the end of his 2nd term.

So take 2 years off the back and 18 months off the front. The Republicans had control over the Presidency plus both Houses of Congress for 4 1/2 years, not 8. For 3 1/3 years, we had divided government and at no point during Bush's terms did the Republications have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

The Republications haven't controlled either house of Congress for almost 4 years.

Hope you didn't work too long making the graphic.

17. Poll: Disenchantment Remains After Midterms
Source: CBS News

A new CBS News poll finds that a majority of Americans are either disappointed by the outcome of last week's midterm elections or simply don't much care.

While 40 percent do say they are pleased by the election outcome, that's a significantly smaller percentage than the 58 percent who were pleased following the 2006 midterm elections.

-snip-

Overall, however, Americans seem frustrated with their representatives and skeptical of what they are planning. The issue that Americans overwhelmingly say they want the new Congress to focus on is the economy and jobs. Yet just 30 percent say Congressional Republicans have a clear plan for creating jobs, while 58 percent say they do not. The figures for President Obama are slightly better, but not much: Thirty-eight percent say he has a clear job creation plan, while 54 percent say he does not.

Despite their gains in last week's elections, Republicans are seen less favorably than Democrats overall. Forty-six percent of Americans have a favorable view of Democrats, matching the percentage who have an unfavorable view. The favorability rating for Republicans is 42 percent, with their unfavorable rating at 48 percent.

There is a potential for real ugliness.
Professional politicians - of all stripes - have failed. Comrehensively.

Many millions simply care nothing at all about politics and government.

19. This tells me that the voters dont see much difference between parties
Thats why the majority was happy about the 2006 election, they (wrongly it seems) believed they voted for a change in policies.

20. The problem is ....
is that probably the majority of the people (the less educated teabaggers, repubs, and even some dems) that voted don't know that it will be impossible to get anything done now that democrats don't have control of the house.
If all the idiots that voted had voted for the dems - and the dems had gotten more than 60 senators in the Senate and held the majority in the House then great things could have been accomplished!

Civics needs to be mandatory in schools like in the old days.
The majority of people nowadays don't even know how many branches of government there are or how many ppl are in the Senate and House, etc.

We need to get the younger generation educated before it's too late!

21. great things wouldn't have been accomplished.
Great things could have been accomplished in the last 4, and especially the last 2 years, but they weren't. Asking for more than large majorities is both houses of congress and the executive is just dreaming. Great things weren't accomplished because most dems in government probably don't agree with you that those things would be "great" at all.

26. Either that
or we need to make Congress work like it was set-up to.
51 votes is a majority. Filibuster? Do it, televise it and show the people what their representatives are fighting for. Unless this happens, the R's will will be seen as champions. Why not? They are, in our "perception is reality" world.
Too bad the Fairness Doctrine will never be reinstated. President Obama could have (should have) done this on his first day in office.
Both parties are corporate owned. The law of the land says that is how it should be.
We have no Democracy.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ. I was proud to vote for Mr. Obama, but how in blazes could he not have seen from Day One that it's all about the economy and jobs? Can he BE this clueless? Or do the corporations own him, too?

The avalanche has begun. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.

I don't see that there will be too much difference. Congress will become more amusing agin, rather than pathetic as it was when controlled by the worthless Democratic Party.
The corporations will do well, the workers and middle class will be ignored except for speeches, the rich will get richer and the poor will get fucked - just like under the current Democratic Administration.

At least the republicans brought their clowns with them.
