Protest results in Fruitvale Station closure (after alleged police brutality in Oakland)
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(11-11) 17:35 PST OAKLAND -- BART closed its Fruitvale Station this evening because of a protest over Oakland police officers' fatal shooting of a domestic violence suspect earlier this week.

The protest started about 3 p.m. on Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland, where officers shot and killed 37-year-old Derrick Jones on Monday night. Police said Jones, a parolee who owned a hairstylist shop, had choked and beaten a woman, then reached into his waistband when officers chased him down.

Police would not say whether they had found a weapon, however, and Jones' relatives denied he had one.

Jones http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/11/10/BAAQ1G9BR3.DTL">was shot on Monday night after assaulting a woman; a Taser failed to contact him. Later, Jones "repeatedly reached for his waistband and refused to put his hands up."

The timing of this incident is interesting; it was 3 days after former BART cop Johannes Mehserle was sentenced to 2 years in prison for the shooting death of Oscar Grant at Fruitvale Station.

1. Sorry, no sympathy here - it is not OK to beat a woman (or anyone up for that matter)up
and run away from the police when she calls 911. Oh and look like you are pulling a gun out. What really are the police supposed to do?

2. I agree, but I think the reaction is largely due to the verdicts from earlier in the week
..police shootings are a touchy subject at the moment.

Police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said Thursday that Jones had a shiny, silver object, but no weapon. He declined to say what the object was.

4. The Police Lie their asses off. Like they do every time.
"He made a furtive gesture" is the first expression they teach in cop CYA school.

5. Jaysus
He was only beating up a woman. It wasn't as if it was someone who mattered.

8. Jaysus -- SHE SAID...
Police said Jones, a parolee who owned a hairstylist shop, had been the subject of a 911 call by a woman who said he choked and beat her. Jones reached into his waistband when officers chased him down, police said, forcing two officers to fire.

13. It's an allegation
It may or may not be true. It seems people are selective (look at the case of the rape accuser in HS who was a cheerleader, etc. where most everybody assumes she was telling the truth). We may never know whether her allegation was true, but given the allegation (and there may have been corroborating physical evidence/witnesses etc.) it certainly justifies a Terry stop at a minimum, if not PC. MOST allegations of domestic violence are bona fide, just like most rape allegations. And then of course once he runs, etc. it becomes obstructing. Regardless, it made him a fleeing VIOLENT crime suspect, and depending on the severity of the choke - a fleeing suspected violent felon. Whether he reached to his waistband etc. is also of course an allegation. It may or may not be true.

6. That's my BART station
The day Mehserle was sentenced there was a large police presence when I returned from work. There were snipers there too.
