Alaska senator close to history as ballots checked

Wed Nov 10, 2010 12:23pm EST

* Alaska Republican Murkowski expected to win Senate vote
* Would be first since 1954 to win "write-in" campaign

By Yereth Rosen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Rebuffed in her party's primary, Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski is now poised to become the first U.S. senator in half a century to win as a write-in candidate if most of roughly 100,000 ballots to be examined this week bear her name, or something close to it.

The tedious task of checking those ballots -- in which voters write in the name of their chosen candidate instead of selecting a printed name -- started on Wednesday, nearly a week after the midterm congressional elections on Nov. 2.

The count in a rented warehouse could make the result of the last undetermined U.S. Senate race clear by the weekend, although legal challenges are likely.

It would mark a stunning comeback for Murkowski, an eight-year senator whose name did not appear as the Republican candidate on the ballot after she lost her party's primary to Joe Miller, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement and Alaska's Sarah Palin.

1. Even though she's a pub,
I'm glad that Miller stands to lose this. In historical fashion no less.

Those loser Republicans (or teabaggers - same thing) refuse to give up.
Maybe if the Democratic Senate adopted the same credo we'd all be a bit better off.

4. Message to Macy's:
Joe Miller called and said to cancel his Martha Stewart drapes and office accessories. He'll be going with the "Bass Pro Shop" collection for his Alaska log cabin.

6. Miller filed a suit to force Alaska to follow their written rules
The rules are very explicit. The name must be exactly as it is filed with elections..The state has said they will let those counting use discretion but Miller says that goes against the written rules..While I do not want him to win, I do believe he is right about this..After the absentee ballots were counted Miller made up almost three thousand votes. He is only down by about 11,000 now instead of almost 14,000 that he was a few days ago..This could be a lot closer than anyone would like...

7. Anyone have a link to the website that will post official 'write-in' numbers?
Or will any numbers be released before 'all' write-ins are counted?

Is going to fight this I heard. They want to be sure that Murkowski was spelled correctly.

11. Okay, time to call in the SCOTUS
Roberts, Scalia and Thomas will straighten this out in no time. I can see where the confusion comes in though, say, if I wanted to vote for Murkowski, and wrote in "Murnowski", why there would be no way to tell what my intent was.
