Bomb plot prompts another look at Dubai crash

Investigators want to rule out possibility that cargo plane was brought down by explosives

The discovery of a plot to send package bombs from Yemen to the United States has prompted investigators to take another look into the crash of a cargo plane in Dubai last month, NBC News reported Saturday.

On Sept. 3, a UPS plane crashed shortly after take off from Dubai International Airport, killing two crew members. Some reports at the time said a fire had broken out in the Boing 747-400 just after it took off.

"People are obviously taking another hard look at why that plane went down, but no hard conclusions have been reached yet," NBC News quoted a U.S. official as saying.

Authorities in the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates will presumably investigate whether the crash was caused by an explosive device similar to the ones found on Friday at the FedEx facility at Dubai airport and on a UPS plane at a U.K. airport.

1. Kind of a poor headline - after just a month I'm sure they're still looking at it,
in the original investigation. But this should focus a bit more attention on the bomb possibility.

I'm surprised that I never even heard of this crash before it was mentioned here, I must have passed right over the news articles...

3. Which would tend to indicate that terrorism had nothing
to do with it (or if it did, that the terrorists were basically idiots). Terrorists don't just plant bombs because they like to watch things blow up. They do it for calculated effect, and that can't happen if nobody pays any attention or attributes the incident to nothing more than accidental forces.

2. 'Boing?'
Did MSNBC lay off all their proofreaders?

Isn't Dubai now where Blackwater CEO Erik Prince has set up shop?

4. Bomb unlikely to have caused UPS freighter crash – GCAA
bomb is unlikely to have been the cause of the UPS cargo jet crash in Dubai in September, the UAE’s civil aviation authority has said.

The agency’s announcement comes amid local media speculation linking the accident in Dubai, which killed the two pilots, and the recent explosive devices that were found on UPS and FedEx planes bound for the US over the weekend.

In a statement to state news agency WAM, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said that the possibility of an onboard explosion on the UPS Boeing 747-400 was regarded as unlikely, and that investigations were ongoing.

"In addition, as per standard accident investigation protocol, following the retrieval of flight recorders from the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CRV), commonly known as black box, the GCAA investigation team has thoroughly analysed the technical data and has concluded that there was no presence of acoustic evidence or any forensic indication supporting the detonation of an explosive device," the press statement said.

5. Detonation, likely not. Malfunction, possibly.
Though I admit to not knowing much about explosives and their capability to burn rather than just "go boom".
