Lawsuit seeks to revive deepwater drilling ban
Source: Associated Press

An environmental group wants a federal judge to put a freeze on deepwater oil drilling back in place.

The Center for Biological Diversity's lawsuit against Interior Secretary Ken Salazar asks a judge in Washington to reinstate the drilling freeze. It was imposed after the April 20 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion spewed hundreds of millions of gallons into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Arizona-based group says the ban should go back into place until the Interior Department completes a comprehensive analysis of drilling risk to the environment and wildlife.

The freeze lasted for six months before Salazar lifted it on Oct. 12. He said new rules had made drilling safer and reduced the risk of another catastrophic blowout.

2. The Center for Biological Diversity is a great organization!
I recommend looking into them and the things they do. I'm sure they could always use more support if you're in a position to help out.

3. We need to ween ourselves off of carbon based fuels and move to clean renewable energy
I say ban offshore drilling and speed the transition to wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy production.

Searching for even more oil to spew carbon pollution into the air is insane. If we don't take action to curb our production of green house gasses, our civilization will cease to exist.

6. Green group sues Interior to reinstate offshore drilling ban
http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/677-e2-wire/125565-green-groups-sues-to-reinstate-offshore-drilling-ban

The Center for Biological Diversity filed litigation against the Interior Department Friday that seeks re-instatement of the federal deepwater drilling ban, alleging Interior lifted the moratorium this month without enough ecological study.

The green group's lawsuit claims that damage from the BP oil spill laid bare the need for a fuller analysis.

“We can no longer afford to have our government simply taking the oil industry at its word when it comes to ensuring the safety of people and the environment. Offshore drilling is a dangerous business, and Salazar’s Interior Department needs to take that threat seriously,” said Miyoko Sakashita, the Center’s oceans director, in a statement.

“The Center seeks an order setting aside the Secretary’s unlawful decision, thus reinstating the moratorium on deepwater drilling, and requiring the Secretary to conduct full and adequate analysis of the environmental impacts stemming from his decision to lift the suspension of deepwater drilling,” states the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
