(Canadian ambassador to US) Doer in battle over border comments (vs. Sharron Angle)
Source: CBC News

U.S. conservatives are fighting back against Gary Doer, Canada's ambassador to the United States, insisting that terrorists have indeed entered the United States through Canada after the former Manitoba premier denounced the recent remarks of a Tea Party candidate.

The campaign of Sharron Angle of Nevada, who is running for the U.S. Senate, pointed Tuesday to the case of Ahmed Ressam, an Algerian who was convicted of trying to bomb Los Angeles International Airport in 1999.

Ressam's plans were thwarted when he was stopped by a diligent U.S. customs officer at the ferry terminal in Port Angeles, Wash., where he'd come from Victoria.

Michelle Malkin, a popular conservative commentator, joined Angle's campaign in defending her.

"Canada's lax border: Sharron Angle is right," read the headline on a Malkin blog post on Tuesday.

4. Do they not have any idea how much money they would lose in trade and tourism if they did that?
Stupid question. Of course they don't. :eyes:

2. Ms Angle - Canadian tourists spent $1.3 billion in Nevada last year...
...you might not want to be alienating them. Ressam did not get in to the US.

Loved this, from the same article:
Former ambassador Frank McKenna once called the diehard American myth a "viral infection."

And McKenna's a Conservative. Sure a Canadian Conservative, but a Conservative none the less.

14. Re: Frank McKenna
I recently came across his name as it appears on the Board of Directors of Brookfield Asset Mgmt., one of the 5 *known* Canadian (foreign) companies who have given $$$ to the US Chamber of Commerce for their nefarious purposes. Just to mention.

8. Yeah, Tea Party. You've already alienated Mexico; now go to work on Canada.
Having friendly neighbors on both our borders is *so* overrated.

17. It's a GOP thing; they pull the "Canadian policies helped 9/11!" card every two years like clockwork
It's happened every election cycle since 2001, and of course immediately after the attacks themselves.

These days most of us just roll our eyes and assume half the US will be trying to blame us rather than themselves in perpetuity, lying to themselves as often as necessary to do so.

9. News flash for ya, Sharron and Michelle.
Border enforcement stops people and contraband from getting IN, not out of a given country... unless you want to emulate the USSR and have internal travel documents, checkpoints and rolling security teams.

I've exited Canada many times over the course of my life, and not ONCE was there any kind of inspection or questioning. Same when I left whatever country to return to Canada.
