Torture and abuse rife in Iraq jails, Amnesty report says
Source: The Guardian

Study finds prisoners, many detained by US forces, being held without rights by Iraqi security forces

Up to 30,000 prisoners, including many veterans of the US detention system, are being held without rights in Iraq and are frequently tortured or abused according to a report by Amnesty International.

The study has found that the human rights situation remains dire in Iraq, with arbitrary arrests and secret detention common, as well as a lack of accountability throughout the security forces.

The abuses are systemic, the report claims, with alleged victims having little redress or access to trial – in many cases for longer than two years.

The allegations are released todaywere released on Monday in a report titled New Order, Same Abuses; Unlawful Detentions and Torture in Iraq. They come as the US military disengages from Iraq and as US diplomats paint a picture of a nascent state, gradually coming to terms with its human rights obligations.

1. All they have to do is say they're doing it in "good faith"
Such excuses all manner of abuses and crimes against humanity.

2. Don't worry folks, it's just a linguistic difference b/t British & American English
No one is being tortured, they're just undergoing 'enhanced interrogation techniques.' And there's no systemic abuse either, it's simply 'creative detention conditions.' You see? A simple mistake anybody could make. So move along, nothing to see here folks...

3. Well isn't this great
The US just replaced one Saddam for another, the only difference are the Iraqi people get to show those purple fingers, as a sign of "Democracy".
