Westboro Baptist Church (Phelps) to burn Qurans if Dove (Jones) doesn't
Source: Ocala

Westboro Baptist Church, the small Topeka, Kan., church that pickets funerals of American soldiers to spread its message that God is punishing the country for being tolerant of homosexuals, has vowed to hold a Quran burning if Gainesville's Dove World Outreach Center calls its off.

"WBC burned the Koran once – and if you sissy brats of Doomed america bully Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center until they change their plans to burn that blasphemous tripe called the Koran, then WBC will burn it (again), to clearly show you some things," the church announced in a news release this week.

I have a feeling they would back off pretty quickly if there was a possibility of losing that status

and into the world of politics

"Most people are aware that a church or religious organization can lose their tax exempt status for engaging in partisan political activity, like endorsing a political candidate. What many aren't aware of, though, is that the same can happen for promoting or engaging in things contrary to government policy. Tax exemption is a privilege, not a right."

33. It wouldn't affect their tax exempt status
as burning a Quran (or flag or bible or bra or...) does not violate the conditions of tax exempt status

39. Oh
I didn't hear what kind of rhetoric the guy was spouting off with.

I'd just like the point out that making statements about values, even if those values have political ramifications (as many, if not most do) does not challenge tax exempt status. This guy's values are totally fucked up, but if he said "vote for John (R) FLA" he would have issues. Saying "burn a Quran because Islam is a devil religion" or other such hogwash would not jeapardize his status.

Just his status as a rational human being. :)

7. LOOK AT MEEEEEEE!!!
Exactly

And of course, the FL nut cases have called it off (due to a "sign from god" :eyes:) and now they want to meet with some Muslims....blah blah blah. Just trying to make their irrelevant and repugnant "church" somehow important. They, like Phelps, are not worth the trouble they cause and have noting to offer. They must justify their way-out notions with narcissistic stunts.

10. Since this must be something illegal because the FBI
visited Jones, maybe they will VISIT westboro and SHUT THEM DOWN permanently. And you are correct. I think the IRS isn't doing their damn job, when they let all these churchs get away with stuff that infringes on separating church and state. Revoke the damn status and be done with it. Then make them prove they aren't breaking the law.

35. This has nothing to do with
tax exempt status, any more than a church leader who burned a flag or a bra would affect tax exempt status.

Churches can take stances like this.

They can't endorse specific candidates or parties. They can endorse positions about various issues, to include expressions of distaste of the Quran (or the flag) by burning it

22. So are we to pretend now that this isn't happening?
I have to say I've been concerned about the Jones-Immam deal because it is founded on the assumption that none of America's 307 million citizens would ever burn a Quoran anytime in the future.

This seemed to me to be a precarious proposition, and a slender thread on which to anchor a complicated deal, but I'm not going to stand in anyone's way.

However, with Phelps now on the scene, and promising to fill in for Pastor Jones, is it game-on again on the Koran-burning front, or are we done with that?

So far we have THREE insane pastors that have said they'd burn the books tomorrow.
Wonder who really will? And how many more nuts are going to come out of the woodwork on Saturday!

1) Rev. Terry Jones of the Dove World Center Outreach in Gainesville, Florida

2) Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas

3) Rev. Bob Old in Springfield Tennessee ---> http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=4533685&mesg_id=4533685
