CU-Boulder considers closing journalism school

The University of Colorado is considering closing its journalism school and revamping the way it trains students for the profession.

Chancellor Phil DiStefano has directed CU officials to "begin the formal process of reviewing the School of Journalism and Mass Communication under the Regent Program Discontinuance Policy," according to an e-mail sent today to faculty and staff members from Interim Provost Russell Moore. "News and communications transmission as well as the role of the press and journalism in a democratic society are changing at a tremendous pace," DiStefano said in a news release. "We must change with it."

Moore is also setting up an exploratory panel to come up with recommendations to create an information, communication and technology program. CU will also set up a panel to explore options by which a contemporary information, communication and technology program could be established on campus.

CU officials said the school will remain open long enough for all current students to complete their degrees.

1. Wow.. those students in the program just lost any value...
to their degrees when they get them... Making this very public announcement is really devastating to them, I should think. That said, I guess it is a natural transition for the field...

2. Might as well - journalism no longer exists in the US
They should change the name to the School of Propaganda and Scare Tactics.

4. These students could do what most journalists do -- just make shit up.
Maybe they could change to Journalism program to a Creative Writing program?
