SPIN METER: Republicans hot, cold on Constitution

By BEN EVANS (AP) – 6 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia won his seat in Congress campaigning as a strict defender of the Constitution. He carries a copy in his pocket and is particularly fond of invoking the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

But it turns out there are parts of the document he doesn't care for — lots of them. He wants to get rid of the language about birthright citizenship, federal income taxes and direct election of senators, among others. He would add plenty of stuff, including explicitly authorizing castration as punishment for child rapists.

This hot-and-cold take on the Constitution is surprisingly common within the GOP, particularly among those like Broun who portray themselves as strict Constitutionalists and who frequently accuse Democrats of twisting the document to serve political aims.

Republicans have proposed at least 42 Constitutional amendments in the current Congress, including one that has gained favor recently to eliminate the automatic grant of citizenship to anyone born in the United States.

1. I'm glad to see this particular hypocrisy pointed out.
It's so obvious and this is the first time I've seen it mentioned in the MSM.

2. Cafeteria Constitutionalists
just like they're often Cafeteria Christians - they pick & choose which parts they want to follow.

4. Cafeteria Family Values (R)

They are pleased as punch to have wide-stance, diaper sex in public bathrooms with faux lesbian bondage rentboys using G.O.P. credit cards, and immediately fOrgiVe themselves -- and give themselves Standing Os -- for having 'handled the luggage.'

But let somebody else somewhere make with the hAnkY pAnkY, and WHAM: Republicons are like totally all hands on deck to fling ze poo.

3. Does Broun of GA think the Constitution
is like a cafeteria??? I want some of this, a little of that, none of this, and change this part to that. Each day I find myself disliking and even hating the repukes more and more. Were they all born with a defective intelligence gene?

8. Lately I've been thinking that science must be wrong and
that there are really two species of humans. It seems pretty impossible that people like them can be the same species as the rest of us.

6. The parts you like do not define one's support for the constitution.
Support for the constitution is defined by your accepting and defending the parts you dislike.

7. The people who walk around with a constitution in their pocket
tend to be the same people who understand it the least.

It's the same crowd who quote Adam Smith. 99% never read his books.

9. I carry one in my purse, lol. And I've actually had to pull it out
during meetings and read part of it to my congressman - twice!

11. At least they are consistent
This is the same way they treat the Holy Bible. They love to swing it around as a weapon of hate. They get confused & angry when someone informs them the message is of forgiveness.

12. The constitution is a Chinese menu to the GOP..
much the same way the Bible is........I'll take these points from column A and those from column B.....and ignore all the parts in between.
