Nancy Pelosi: Who's funding the mosque opposition?
Source: wp

Speaker Pelosi's office has issued a statement, clarifying her earlier remarks to a local California radio station. "I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that 'We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center," the statement reads, "At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.'

1. Easy question
The right wing smear machine! Republicans don't have a plan to fix the economy, they keep saying they do, but won't produce it. They want to change the subject from all the insane things they have been saying and doing so they are trying to come up with "wedge" issues, like this one, to avoid having to come up with any real plans on how to produce jobs, fix the economy, reduce the deficit, etc. As long as they and try and control the issues, and keep those issues on their wedge issues, they think they an win. Democrats need to force them to discuss the real issues, not stupid wedge issues that are just distractions from the real issues!

2. She is asking because she already knows
Now if the Democrats would at least counter-attack for once, instead of just dropping hints

10. If American media weren't such a friggin' joke, Pelosi wouldn't have to drop hints.

3. With all due respect, Ms. Pelosi please get off the Mosque and
start selling the Democratic Party and its principles.

Bishops open up your books. Evangelical Preachers open up your
books. All churches open up your books.

13. Better just to end all tax exemptions. I'd still allow deductions for donors, if
the donors are contributing to a church's charitable activities. But that's it.

As to real estate tax in particular, this is the perfect time to move, what with communities have to cut back on essential services, like fire, police and even street lights. I'd phase it in, to give churches a chance to unload properties, if they can't afford the taxes.

American taxpayers have subsidized religion far too long, especially since much of it has practically become a wing of the Republicon Party. Enough!

4. I realize the OP was using the title of the article linked to (per LBN rules)

but, except in those cases, it would be real nice if people on DU would stop perpetuating the lie that this is a mosque.

It is a community center and if you read Pelosi's statement, that's how she referred to it.

6. Isn't it though?
Isn't it a masjid though? Place of Prostration. It will have places for people to pray(not just muslims if I understand correctly). It will be used to give information to the community, to help resolve conflict within the community as well as be a place for muslims to pray and speak with an imam. All mosques are community centers, but not all community centers are mosques.

So what if it's a mosque?

7. The mosque
A Muslim house of prayer, will go up 2 blocks away in the community center. A 15 story building with a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.

"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part...

"It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion," Khan said. "It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum."

15. The Center will include a space for praying. That does not make it a mosque or a House of Prayer
(Whatever the Hell that may mean).

Per Jon Stewart, there is, and long has been, a mosque 4 blocks away from the site of the World Trade Center.

12. I am betting that the Sarah PAC gets more $ in contributions for what
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 02:51 PM by activa8tr
Sarah said, and we all know Sarah said it just to get more $.

Then there is the corporate media, not just Fixed Noise, but all of them, who get more viewers when they add oxygen to the flames of the CONTROVERSY rather than covering the actual facts. More ratings, more $ for the corporate media.

It's a vicious cycle, where the "mosque at Ground Zero" is good for the corporate news business, not just for all the Republicans running for office, and for our Queen of mis-statements, Sarah P, herself.

Nancy, I love you dearly, but you asked the wrong question: "WHO is getting richer from flaming this bigoted "controversy"?"... that's the question.

14. Mosque - Smosque - I need a JOB!
- Get us back to work and people won't have time to worry over the silly stuff. And since when is it a crime to have a different opinion? I believe the same 1st Amendment that allows the mosque allows others to oppose it, too.

17. Jump on it Nancy - we aren't far enough behind in the polls yet..
Maybe of you do this loud enough and often enough, the repugs can get a veto-proof majority instead of just taking control of Congress.

Elections are about what the people think & feel, not about law-school debate issues. Just ask Michael Dukakis.
