Mississippi attorney general disputes BP's rosy claims report

JACKSON, Miss. — BP says the company has not denied claims made for lost income from the Deepwater Horizon oil catastrophe, but the company's records show 63 percent of claims are still pending without payment, Mississippi's attorney general said Tuesday.

“It is unfortunate that, despite all its promises about taking care of our residents on the Coast, BP is still holding 6,050 actionable claims,” Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Hood and fellow attorneys general from Gulf states have urged a faster claims process when independent claims administrator Ken Feinberg takes over Aug. 23. Feinberg has said people will be able to file claims online and that legitimate, documented claims will be paid.

BP's statistics show that 63 percent of claims — or 6,050 of 9,600 filed — were still being evaluated last week. A total of $28.6 million had been paid, mostly for property damage and wage losses.

Jim Hood (born in New Houlka, Mississippi as James Hood) is the Attorney General of Mississippi. A Democrat, he was elected in 2003, defeating the Republican nominee Scott Newton. Hood, a former District Attorney, succeeded Mike Moore.

He is a native of New Houlka, Mississippi in Chickasaw County.

In 2005, Hood prosecuted former Klansman Edgar Ray Killen for orchestrating the murder of Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney in Philadelphia, Mississippi over forty years ago.

He has been active in the legal aspects of the recovery of Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. Shortly after Katrina, Hood partnered with Mississippi plaintiff attorney Dickie Scruggs to file suit against numerous high profile insurance companies. Hood's leadership has been praised by some as allowing homeowners a better opportunity for recovery than in neighboring Louisiana,<1> but Scruggs and Hood have also been criticized for over-zealously prosecuting insurance companies and because Scruggs helped convey confidential documents, which Hood used in a criminal probe, supposedly to pressure State Farm Insurance into settlement.<2> In 2008, Judge William Acker criticized Hood by name in a judicial opinion for his role in helping Scruggs commit civil contempt.<3> This entire saga was recounted in the 2009 book entitled Kings of Tort.<4>

Hood was reelected on November 6, 2007.
