Man dies in attack on police station, official says(Texas-Truck full of ammo)

Source: MSNBC

McKinney, TEXAS — A man died Tuesday after firing shots at a police station in McKinney, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported a local official as saying.

"A suspect is dead," said McKinney city spokeswoman Anna Folmsbee. It was not clear if the man killed himself or was shot dead by police.

Other reports said a second man was later taken into custody.

A pickup truck was reportedly on fire and riddled with bullet holes outside of the police station and city hall. The vehicle was said to contain ammunition, which began exploding.

An alert issued by the McKinney Police Department said, "Suspects possibly set truck on fire to draw people out of building" and used a semi-automatic rifle "to shoot out front of building."

Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 12:58 PM by RamboLiberal
A gunman with an assault rifle was shot and killed this morning outside police headquarters in McKinney after spraying the building with bullets.

Police haven’t released the identity of the man, who drove a Ford F-150 pickup with a trailer to the station, where it was soon engulfed in flames, Deputy Chief Scott Brewer said at a morning press conference.

Investigators believe ammunition inside the vehicle started the fire. After the fire started, the gunman began yelling and spraying the police building with gunfire, Brewer said.

-----

A witness told WFAA-TV (Channel 8) that he was driving by the police station with his wife and son when he saw the gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and shooting at a campus police car.

A police source told CBS 11 News that the suspect lived in Anna and less than an hour after the shooting Collin County sheriff's deputies were waiting outside a house in rural Anna. The deputies were waiting for a search warrant before going inside the house.

http://cbs11tv.com/local/Collin.County.Collin.2.1864290.html

Early this afternoon, Collin County sheriff's deputies were at outside a house in rural Anna, where they said they were waiting for McKinney police and a search warrant. The area is one of gravel roads and manufactured homes.

Neighbors said they saw the man who lived at the house with his brother leave this morning in his pickup pulling a trailer. They said they saw the same pickup and trailer on the TV news.

"He was a pretty quiet guy," said Zeppy Benavides, who lives next door. He said they recently discussed putting a fence between their yards.

He said his neighbor would fire handguns into the air on Christmas and the Fourth of July.

"We went inside; we didn't complain."

15. The article mentions them pulling a trailer.
I wonder if they were planning a McVeigh-type operation.

There appears to be a USDA building in McKinney, but little else in the way of federal symbols for them to try something.

Then again, there could be no motivation at all, other than wanting a body count.

A Patrick Sharp of Anna has a MySpace page that shows a man holding a number of guns. One caption reads, "I love guns more than toothpaste."

Another photo shows a steel plate that had been shot up. The caption reads, "What if that was your face?" A third image shows a target with a photo of Osama bin Laden. "Shot his a** at 300 yards as well," the caption says.

The page was last updated on July 8. It described the owner as "fermented," one of the angriest of the options.

19. McKinney Sniper Identified as Patrick Sharp
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 05:03 PM by RamboLiberal
MCKINNEY, Texas - The McKinney sniper who opened fire on police headquarters on Tuesday has been identified as Patrick Gray Sharp.

According to Chief Doug Kowalski, 29-year-old Sharp was fatally shot during the assault but that it was not immediately clear if his wounds were self inflicted.

Patrick Sharp has no criminal record but was heavily armed and had plotted the assault, Kowalski said.

"This is a little bit unprecedented. He had a plan. He was activating his plan," Kowalski said.

http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/081710-McKinney-Sniper-Identified-as-Patrick-Sharp

4PM Press Conference - he had a .223 rifle, mossberg shotgun, and a 45 pistol. Had setup a sniper's nest. Fired 100+ rounds at police building.

http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/McKinney-police-press-conference-at-4-pm-100922494.html

Sharp was found to be heavily armed, carrying a .223 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .45 semiautomatic pistol.

Before the attack came to an end, police said Sharp managed to fire off more than 100 rounds at the municipal building, shattering nearly two dozen windows and leaving bullet marks all over the brick facade.

Kowalski said investigators have determined the who, what, where, when and how in regard to the attack, but are at a loss as to why the incident took place. Sharp had no criminal record and investigators could find no discord between himself, the city of McKinney, the police department or the nearby college where he was formerly a student.

"He had a plan, he was activating his plan," Kowalski said. "He looked like he knew what he wanted to do ... it's unprecedented ... I really think that this was a clear-cut case of suicide by cop."

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Sharp's residence and found more weapons. He had a roommate, who is out of town and was shocked to hear about his roommate's actions, according to Kowalski.

22. Photo of the shooter Patrick Gray Sharp
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 05:27 PM by RamboLiberal

"At this point, we are really trying to determine why he targeted the McKinney Police Department and also officers of Collin College and their police department," Kowalski said.

Sharp, of Anna, Texas, was a student at Collin College at one point in 2004, though Kowalski said "it doesn't seem like he had any particular beef with the college" or with police.

"This doesn't make any sense to any of us," he said. "The act is completely senseless."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/08/17/texas.shooting/?hpt=T2

Police say a man who opened fire on a suburban police station may have been trying to draw people out of the building and blow up a trailer loaded with explosives before he was found dead following a shootout.

McKinney Police Chief Doug Kowalski said 29-year-old Patrick Gray Sharp parked his pickup truck and a trailer in front of the station Tuesday morning, then set it on fire before retreating across a road and firing at the building.

Kowalski says the gunman fired more than 100 rounds before he died. He said it wasn't clear how Sharp died, although he said one witness indicated it might have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kowalski said the trailer was filled with wood chips, ammonia nitrate, road flares and gasoline.

Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 10:23 AM by slackmaster
I'm not sure what you mean by "a lot", Javaman, but every vet I've ever met in my life has just wanted to get back to something resembling a normal life.

The most anti-war, anti-violence people I've ever known were all war veterans. Being in combat changes a person's perspective on what is and is not important. Veterans as a group, I believe, tend to see career politicians in general as idiots; but they've realized that there isn't any point in wasting moments of their precious lives worrying about shit they can't change.

I assume you mean that out of the large number of people coming home from the present wars, even a small percentage being off the deep end pose a real threat to public safety.

I hope your fear is exaggerated.

23. Roommates comments
Sharp's roommate, Eric McClellan, told The Associated Press by phone that he was on vacation outside of Texas when he received calls from state troopers and his stepfather telling him what happened. He said he was "still in shock," and that there was nothing about Sharp that would lead him to believe he would try to attack police.

"He was fine and dandy when I left Texas two days ago, and, all of a sudden, I get a phone call," McClellan said. "There's nothing I can say. He was a great guy, a good friend."

McClellan said he was questioned about Sharp by police and couldn't provide them with much information.

He said he and Sharp kept guns in their residence because they like sports shooting.

"We're Texans," he said. "We have the right to bear arms."

24. Biggest complaint fear government would ban guns
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:56 PM by RamboLiberal
The only thing he ever complained about, Cheryl Cox said, was a fear the government would ban guns.

Cheryl Cox, McClellan's(Sharp's roommate) mother, said Sharp and her son both worked in security at Encore.

They kept lots of ammunition, Cheryl Cox confirmed. She said Sharp recently bought a semi-automatic rifle.

A MySpace page now removed from the social networking site showed photos of Sharp holding a number of firearms and wearing a black vest.

Photo captions included: "anybody need security?" "u talkin to me?" and "My AR-15 with the Seals 6-24x50 scope, a 900 yard scope!"

http://www.istockanalyst.com/article/viewiStockNews/articleid/4417080

Neighbor: Mullins said Sharp sometimes talked about politics and taxes.

"He seemed agitated with a lot of stuff going on, with taxes going up," he said.

"Killers like to share their thoughts, seek attention," read a message the girl says Sharp sent her Tuesday morning on Facebook.

"I like to scare people. I enjoy watching people beg for their life. I like watching them drown. When they take their last breath, oh it's amazing."

"I have alot of wrong with me, but didn't' seek," he told the girl, who is not being identified. "I don't take meds."

40. Suburban Dallas gunman licensed in law enforcement
McKINNEY, Texas — A security guard who was certified to work in state law enforcement killed himself during a shootout with suburban Dallas police after luring officers outside by setting his pickup truck on fire, officials said Wednesday.

-----

State records show Sharp was licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety to work as a security guard in 2004. Three years earlier, he was licensed as a jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Sharp worked as a security guard for building wire manufacturer Encore Wire Corp. in McKinney, said Cheryl Cox, the mother of Sharp's roommate. A spokesman for Encore Wire told The Dallas Morning News that Sharp resigned a few days ago. An Encore official wasn't immediately available to comment to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
