Turkish security men shot and wounded a man who entered the Turkish embassy's compound in Tel Aviv, an Israeli official who declined to be identified said on Tuesday.

The identity of the man and his motives remain unclear. Israel's Channel 2 television said the man was slightly wounded and remains inside the embassy.

Police blocked a major seaside road outside the embassy and several ambulances were at the scene.

Man shot at Turkish embassy

Initial report: At least one person wounded in shooting incident at Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv Tuesday evening; police say another incident may still be ongoing within embassy walls, large forces deployed at scene

Initial report: At least one person sustained gunshot wounds at the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv Tuesday evening.

According to initial reports from the shooting scene, a naked man arrived at the embassy and was shot.

Meanwhile, another incident is reportedly taking place within the embassy walls. Witnesses at the site said several shots were fired, but no further information had been provided. Other witnesses reported seeing a bullet hole in one of the embassy's windows.

Large police forces were deployed at the scene and are waiting outside the building; diplomatic protocol prevents them from going in as the embassy is outside the Israel Police's jurisdiction. SWAT teams and police negotiators have also been rushed to the scene in the event that hostages are being held inside the embassy.

TEL AVIV — A man has taken hostages in the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv Tuesday after shots were fired outside, Israeli police and a Foreign Ministry official said.

Turkey's news agency said embassy security guards captured the attacker. The report quoted anonymous officials from the embassy.

A newspaper identified the attacker as a Palestinian who tried to seek asylum at another embassy four years earlier.

"This is a hostage situation," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told The Associated Press.

A lawyer told Israel Radio that the hostages, the consul and his wife, escaped.
