SC police: Mom killed children before sinking car
Source: Associated Press

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – A South Carolina mother who claimed her children drowned when their car careened into a river was charged with murder Tuesday after authorities said she confessed to suffocating the two toddlers and then faking the accident.

Sheriff Larry Williams said 29-year-old Shaquan Duley told investigators she was distraught about money troubles and unemployment and that she killed her children by putting her hand over their mouths after a dispute with her own mother. He says Duley then strapped the children into her car and drove it into a river Monday morning.

"This was a young lady that was in trouble, in trouble in more ways than she realized," Williams said. "She was in trouble and she didn't know where to turn."

Williams said the responsibilities of being a mother were simply too much for Duley, who didn't show signs of remorse during an overnight interview with authorities.

10. She won't enjoy that remorse in prison for long.
She will die in prison much sooner than that.

11. She'll be in protective custody like Susan Smith
And, people have a right to be safe in prison. She needs to never see the light of day, unless she is insane, but it doesn't sound like she is.

18. She'll need to be.
Pedos are the bottom rung in male prisons and I imagine women who kill their own children are in female prisons.

Then, she went REALLY round the bend, starting around Elizabeth Smart. Maybe she has calmed down again.

3. "distraught over money troubles"
There are probably millions of parents facing the same situation, yet they don't murder their children.

Lock her up for forty years.

26. It's a trend in South Carolina
And it's not new. I was raised there for most of my childhood. Folks down there don't know how messed up it is, and always has been.

9. what is it with SC women and killing children?
and what are signs of remorse? If she cries too much, then she's dramatic and surely guilty. If she cries too little, she's cold-hearted and surely guilty.

Exactly what is the sign for the requisite amount of remorse, since it's so subjective depending upon who you talk to?

It was an observation, not a criticism. That you popped up and interjected yourself into the middle of it and you took it the way you did is something you need to work out, not me.

Was this an "I'll show you" to her mom? Maybe mom wouldn't give her any money.

Poor babies. They probably endured much abuse before this.

22. "She was in trouble and she didn't know where to turn"
The Republicans are looking for "death panels" associated with health care insurance reform, but they're looking in the wrong place. The shredding of social services puts us all on our own little death panels. You don't know how to parent perfectly from the moment of conception? Too bad, because there's no help for you. And whenever someone says, "Maybe we should have a program or a place where overwhelmed parents can get some help," we hear the usual yammering (from both sides of the political spectrum) about government interference in people's lives, rampant nanny statism, and how can a bunch of bureaucrats know more about parenting than a mother (as if government bureaucrats don't have offspring).

If a program does run the gauntlet of negativity and actually get going, it's always the first thing on the chopping block when local budgets get tight. Tax breaks for overpriced condos must survive, but the community's children can make do with less, or nothing. Now, two more kids are dead, a woman is going to prison for the rest of her life, and a whole bunch of people will make themselves feel better about a sick society by pretending it was all the mother's fault.

33. And you know this how?
Are you a good friend of hers? Were you closely involved with her family? If that's the case, why weren't you more of a friend to her, and help her get to some assistance? The bottom line is neither you nor I will ever know what drove her to this extremity, or what exactly the circumstances were. Would a more comprehensive social safety net have helped her? Maybe, maybe not. But it surely wouldn't have hurt.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable sitting in judgment on her if there was some reasonable assurance that she had help from the get-go (by which I mean pre-natal medical care for nutrition, etc.; post-partum medical care; parental advice folks readily available by telephone; and so forth) and she actively refused that assistance. As it is, we know that she had no job, three kids, and who knows what in the way of prospects.

She will, of course, be subject to criminal sanction, and probably spend the rest of her life in prison. Pardon me for not joining the judgment parade, but it's my feeling she doesn't require my tut-tutting to feel worse than she does right now, or for the rest of her life.

36. It doesn't take any 'help' from the govt or anyone else to know
not to kill your children. Some people are just dumber than gerbils, and need to live out their years in prison after they eat their young.
