India ready to give more aid but Pak silent
Edited on Mon Aug-16-10 10:34 PM by cosmicone
Source: Times of India

NEW DELHI: Even as more floods threaten to inundate Pakistan, the government there is reluctant to avail of India's offer of assistance.

India indicated on Monday that it was willing to give more assistance over the $5 million it has already pledged. "We can and are willing to do much more," senior sources in the government said.

But New Delhi is yet to receive a response from the Zardari government to its earlier offer of assistance of $5 million.

India's offer of assistance was conveyed to Pakistan by foreign ministerS M Krishna when he spoke to his counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi last weekend. Pakistan's foreign office, however, did not mention the Indian offer, merely saying that Krishna had extended India's sympathies to Pakistan at the time of crisis.

He was a true statesman and would have brought peace and prosperity to Pakistan but as always, the military doesn't want peace because peace will make it lose its job and the generals' Swiss bank accounts.

4. no, it's really not the same thing, we have civilian control of govt
while over there the military has too much influence in civilian affairs.

also many in military were critical of Bush war . either way it was the civilians during Bush's leadership who made decisions and fucked everything up.

7. +1
And add that there's noticeably fewer Swiss bank accounts. They're not perfect by any means, but a military coup in the US is unfathomable to ppl here, while over there, it's fairly common.

8. Too bad the following generations like Benazir, turned out to be scumbag shit.
I don't think Zulfikar would've approved of Benazir killing her brothers, and raising the level of arrogance. I'm really scared about the future of that country.

6. If all the generals' and politicians' offshore bank accounts are emptied
Pakistan will have over $25 or so billion in cash all looted from the Pakistani people.

9. I know that all countries have gross inequality between rich and poor
but Pakistan does seem to take the prize or is one of the top five. How can Zardari or any of the generals live with themselves at times like this when the need is so massive? 24 million people affected and he has a French Chateau to enjoy. A chateau not just a house in the French countryside but a bloody chateau and I don't think he thinks there one damn thing wrong with that picture.

And then to top it off has the audacity to be thinking about Indian's offer of aid. But OTOH given that Pakistanis and Indians loathe each other, do you think that a significant number of Pakistanis would be upset if he accpted Indian aid?

10. The Pakistani citizens won't be upset
It is just that they don't want their people to know that the help came from India which allows them to keep India as a boogieman and get more money for the military.

If citizens started wondering, "if Indians are helping, what do we need to fight them for?", the military sinks.

Made in India labels ripped off blankets India donated in the last disaster.
