McMahon wins GOP primary in Conn.
Source: Boston Globe

WASHINGTON — In one of a series of intensely watched primaries in pockets around the country, Republican voters in Connecticut yesterday overwhelmingly chose a World Wrestling Entertainment executive and political novice as their candidate for US Senate, further illustrating the depth of voter anger and the power of outsider candidates, particularly women, in this volatile midterm election season.

Yahoo! Buzz ShareThis .Linda McMahon, who defeated former US Representative Rob Simmons in Connecticut, will now face Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. They are vying to replace longtime Senator Chris Dodd, a Democrat who is retiring after nearly three decades.

McMahon’s victory continues a string of strong campaigns for women in the GOP, from California to South Carolina.

In the race to replace retiring Republican Governor Jodi Rell, Stamford Mayor Tom Malloy upset businessman Ned Lamont for the Democratic nomination. Lamont had been leading in the most recent polls. Malloy will face GOP winner Tom Foley, the former US ambassador to Ireland who won a tight race over Lieutenant Governor Michael Fedele

Wow! They elected from the WWE! I would never vote for her because all she is about the show and not the real thing. Wrestling is fake and is so Linda McMahon. Vote No for Linda McMahaon.

7. Wow another bought election. If we, here on DU, were only rich enough to spend $100 million of our
money, we too could be in the Senate!

8. What's the reality of the race? Given RAYGUN, her winning wouldn't surprise me.
As for her spending $20M, other candidates have tried that before, even $30M, and it doesn't always work.

She slapped down the reporter from Nightline who tried to ask about wrestling, cutting off the question and saying, "The voters are interested in the economy, not in soap opera storylines."

But when they played the clip on MSRNC the Dem "strategist" said that the SOURCE of all of her money and therefore the financing of her campaign came from WWE so it's a legitimate line of questioning.

9. Their strategy is to call the WWE thing "soap opera." Their ad did the same thing.
Trying to fob it off as a mere trifle. Can't wait for the pro-Blumenthal ad with the video of her kicking a guy in the nuts and other ones that degrade women.

11. She ran against Rob Simmons, not the strongest candidate.

A lot of money being thrown around CT is not unusual. I grew up in a very wealthy town here. However, the money she did make was through being pretty sleazy. I like wrestling, and went to many shows in Hartford at the Civic Center. In my opinion she and Vince pushed the steroids and treated their workers very poorly. That is what bothers me most about her.
