10. Tres bien!
France ROCKS!

Funny thing, although my name is Italian...it actually is from the French... but it has the Italianate endng. The French were in Sicily, so my surname, I think, is actually French...But I don't know of any relatives in France. I had to laugh when I was at Napoleon's tomb and a group of Japanese tourists wanted to take my picture because they thought I was French....what the heck does a Frenchman/woman look like? LOL

12. Your ancestors Gloria may have had a very interesting and troubled fate
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 08:02 PM by Rochambeau
Gloria !!
Yes Sicily has been occupied and ruled by "the french" from 1061 (Comte Roger de Hauteville from Normandy - at this time nobility from Normandy was still more viking than french so it was more a Norman conquest than a real french one except on the cultural and intellectual field were the norman vikings knights were already acting like true catholic french knights). They founded Sicily as a kingdom in 1130. They have built the cathedrals of Palermo, Monreale, Cefalù and Messina for exemple.
Then it was the Hohenstaufen from germany and then the kingdom was conquered by Charles the 1st, Duke of Anjou (a 100% frenchman this one) in 1266.
In 1282 it's the sicilian insurrection against the angevins (known as the The Sicilian Vespers) which led to a six weeks massacre of the french population living in Sicily wich massacre is concidered as complete or barely complete.

So if your ancestors came from sicily with a french name they are from a very small and old minority(13th century!!!) who survived the massacre !!
Interesting fate isn't it !!!:)

16. Is there anything international about this?
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 04:49 AM by Buzzz
Spain? Bush? Something else? Just curious. It appears to be entirely related to domestic policies.

17. In the sense that it suggests that political business ...
.. is returning to normal after that horrendous Presidential in which the left was obliged to support the Conservative in the second round in order to beat the neo-nazi, Le Pen.

The right were becoming very cocksure in Europe and this will take the wind out of their sails, prior to the Euro elections.

21. I guess this means the terrorists won again?
The people were were upset with their RW governments support of the Bush war so now they are siding with the terrorists to prevent attacks - oh wait, I guess that doesn't work here, never mind.
