Incoming BP CEO: Time for 'scaleback' in cleanup
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 01:13 PM by Indianademocrat91
Source: Associated Press

BP's incoming CEO said Friday that it's time for a "scaleback" of the massive effort to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, but stressed the commitment to make things right is the same as ever.

Tens of thousands of people — many of them idled fishermen — have been involved in the cleanup, but more than two weeks after the leak was stopped there is relatively little oil on the surface, leaving less work for oil skimmers to do.

Bob Dudley, who heads BP's oil spill recovery and will take over as CEO in October, said it's "not too soon for a scaleback" in the cleanup, and in areas where there is no oil, "you probably don't need to see people in hazmat suits on the beach."

He added, however, that there is "no pullback" in BP's commitment to clean up the spill. Dudley was in Biloxi to announce that former Federal Emergency Management Agency chief James Lee Witt will be supporting BP's Gulf restoration work.

So now since this guy is an American citizen can we throw him in fucking jail for criminal negligence for telling people to not protect themselves with the suits from the vapors and odors in the air near the beaches? Makes me wanna puke at how stupid and criminal these people can be.

12. How ironic.
You should have said "it's," not its. How does it feel when people pick on you for the irrelevant?

25. I've just wasted ten minutes of my life....
reading arguments on both sides of the debate regarding the usage of SPELT vs. SPELLED and PLED vs. PLEADED ;)
I can't get you on your use of 'spelt' because apparently it is okay to use it. LOL :)

3. For supposedly sophisticated executives, their P.R. instincts suck
If, for example, he said "It's time to think about refocusing our efforts from immediate, emergency, response, which seems to be winding down, to the more difficult long term remediation", then he might get better reactions. As it is, we are expecting BP to weasel out of their commitments at first opportunity and this statement only confirms our worst suspicions.

Sheesh

6. Someone should look up this guy's first TV appearance just after the
spill... he was seen on tape saying something to the effect that the spill was really "insignificant", I heard from some liberal radio show host yesterday.

I'd like to find the link.

16. I didnt find an interview with those words but i found an interview on CNN
at the end of May where he said that the scientists who said the leak was way more than 5,000 barrels were wrong and that the estimates of more than 5,000 were exaggerated. heres the link --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APtFplDvN20

7. We'll see
I'm personally very interested why this would be their line.

A bit of background: Two nights ago, my teen-aged daughter came to me fighting back tears. I asked her why and she responded that she "hated people". Specifically I found out she was angry with the greedy people whose disregard brought about this catastrophe. She plainly stated that she was going to Gulfport this Saturday. Given that she does not yet have her driver's permit, I asked how/why and she replied, "To help clean the beaches."

So, being a father who can hardly tell a crying girl no, I have agreed to drive her to the coast for the day tomorrow. I must admit to a great curiosity in myself as to the sight that awaits us when we arrive. As for agree to allow her to help with the clean-up, I intend to get a better perspective on that tomorrow as well.

13. i don't think oil is a big problem at gulfport but i've been away
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 01:56 PM by pitohui
haven't been out there for a couple, three weeks, won't be there for a couple more

i know for sure the beach is open

the july 29 MDEQ seems to suggest that there is little oil other than scattered tar balls at gulfport

it was my understanding that barrier islands took the brunt of it in mississippi but according to their official website all barrier islands in the national park service, mississippi district are now open

i hope you will take time to post your story when you return

note-- i've edited to remove link that isn't linking for some reason, but there are useful links here:

32. Our trip to Gulfport
My daughter and I spent the afternoon Saturday on the beach in Gulfport. As we strolled up and down the beach, she would step a few feet into the water to get a shell or inspect a sandbar as I kept an anxious eye on where she was stepping. No tarballs, lots of trash. Rubber glove probably rom the cleanup, broken up vinyl board from a boat hull, and more jellyfish than I have EVER seen at one time there. Every ten feet there were 4 or 5 washed up and in varying states of corruption, while looking no more than five feet into the surf dozens more drifting with the tide. This is what I found most disturbing about the changes so far.

No tarballs, no 'mousse' or 'tooth-paste' LOL. No 'sheen' or sludge on the surface. For all intents and purposes, save for the jellyfish, the beach at Gulfport(and the water) was as it has been all my life, Moderately filthy.

I can't help but feel now that I was overreacting to the effect the spill would have on one of my fondest childhood memories (going to the beach). I feared that my children would not be able to enjoy it as I had, but I see now that I was mostly wrong. I am sure that they will have to be more careful when taking a dip in the Gulf, but they will be able to.

My daughter's state of mind after our trip? Much better. I asked her how her day had been while driving home and she said it was 'In her top ten.' :)

Perhaps a bit of teen-aged naivete/bravado, but I was reassured that she seemed reassured.

22. Commitment to make things right in the eyes of BP likely means
to reestablish brand confidence and to be able to receive deep water drilling permits with no additional regulation again.

They may have done a bit, but in the end BP really only wants one thing. To maximize profit as soon as possible.

As for doing anything about any commitments, well, now, that's a whole 'nother story. Our only real commitment is to following our greed.
