Dems Call On GOPers To Renounce Phyllis Schlafly Over Remarks About 'Unmarried Women' (AUDIO)
Christina Bellantoni | July 29, 2010, 4:28PM

Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly took aim at "unmarried women" at a recent fundraiser and in an interview with TPM, saying that they overwhelmingly support President Obama and are all on welfare. Democrats aim to exploit the comments to pressure the more than 60 Republican candidates who have earned Schlafly's endorsement.

"Unmarried women, 70% of unmarried women, voted for Obama, and this is because when you kick your husband out, you've got to have big brother government to be your provider," said Schlafly, president of Eagle Forum and infamous for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment.

A liberal organization recorded the Schlafly comments at a Troy, Michigan fundraiser Saturday for a Republican congressional candidate, the Detroit Free Press reported. In an interview with TPM this afternoon Schlafly stood by her comments and said Obama is trying to boost welfare rolls to help with his reelection and to help Democrats.

"Yes I said that. It's true, too. All welfare goes to unmarried moms," Schlafly told TPM. "They are trying to line up their constituency for Obama and Democrats against Republican candidates."

2. Renounce a fellow conservatroid?
'Renounce' just isn't in their vocabulary when it comes to the asinine statements of one of their own. More typically, they'll turn their heads, stick their fingers in their ears & sing Tinga-Linga-Loo until the media stops paying attention, and in the case of a repuke, the compliant/complicit corporate media will oblige and end their 'suffering.'

3. Some women are just unmarried because there is no husband
 she thinks a woman is single due to "kicking her husband out" as if no man has ever left a woman! And as if wars and such don't leave at least some women unable to marry.

this woman is such an idiot, I feel sorry for her husband. He should leave her, so she'll be forced onto welfare.

My aunt and uncle were case workers too.
And Phyllis ("I can leave my husband and children at home to go out and rail against women who do the same.") is full of it.

It's just easier for her to have a boogeyman (or woman, as the case may be), and the "welfare queen" stereotype was apparently ripe for an upgrade.

16. I wonder if calling "on the GOP to renounce" is a reasonable, intelligent
and politically significant response to the unending stream of hate. Perhaps just recording them and playing them back in a stream, like baseball bloopers, at election time would be more effective. Maybe they already do this? I don't know. I've never seen a campaign ad on tv. But if they don't, they should.

47. She said the converse: all welfare recipients are unmarried mothers
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 12:45 PM by Recursion
Which, depending on your definition of "welfare", is more or less true: PRWOA ("Welfare reform") made it difficult for any family situation other than an unmarried mother in sole custody of children to get TANF aid -- AFDC let pretty much any family that needed it get aid (although both systems' structures perversely encourage families to break up).

In short: Republicans push for welfare "reform" that limits it to single mothers, and then complain that only single mothers get welfare.

25. Oh, the Irony the Irony
The first welfare bill (Aid to Dependent Children), passed in 1935, had considerable conservative support because they believed a woman's place was in the home and that single mothers shouldn't be compelled by necessity to enter the workforce. They also greatly feared that these women might enter the workforce as prostitutes, and they were most diligent in their efforts to avoid that. :smoke:

41. Based on Income tax or all taxes? I'd rather see the federal gov't
not provide money to the states. They could reduce federal taxes by that amount and states could tax it according to the services they provide. The lower level the politicians, I believe the more responsive they are to their constituents.

42. This is how low Schlafly wants to sink?
I mean seriously. Schlafly uses her political power to push an archaic lifestyle (women should stay in the kitchen and submit to their husbands) rather than support basic human dignity for women.

And before anyone wants to compare Schlafly to Shirley Sherrod and wail that liberals are out to smear her, the TPM article reads: "Schlafly stood by her comments and said Obama is trying to boost welfare rolls to help with his reelection and to help Democrats." Yes, TPM actually followed up with Schlafly, while Breitbart did not even contact Sherrod. So that dirty liberal website TPM actually has ethics compared to Breitbart's empire of junk blogs.

Besides, that generalization about single women is just so ignorant...I don't know what to say right now. Maybe she should meet Ann Coulter, who wrote the foreward for Schlafly's book Feminist Fantasies. Coulter's never been married. So is Ann Coulter=lazy welfare scraper? Laura Ingraham has never been married either (and even once dated Keith Olbermann!) and yet she's a single mom who adopted two kids.

Guess what? TPM also reports: "Congressional candidate Andrew (Rocky) Raczkowski said he was surprised by Schlafly's remarks at his fundraiser and said he disagrees with Schlafly after liberals and his Republican primary opponent Paul Welday called on him to denounce her." See? Even the candidate (a man, btw) is shaking his head in disgust.

Hey everybody, y'know how modern hip hop music gets a lot of criticism for being misogynistic and degrading to women (with all the uses of "bitch" and "ho")? Well I wonder when Phyllis Schlafly at age 86 will release her debut rap album titled For the Ladies featuring hits like "Ain't No Such Thing as Rape If You're Married" and "You're Either Married and Classy or Single and Lazy".

Stay classy, Mrs. Schlafly!

(Bill Cosby, a much more decent American senior citizen, released a hip hop album Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency in 2009.)
