Arizona Helped Deport Thousands Without New Law
Source: Associated Press

Sheriff targeted in Justice probe arrested most immigrants deported in federal-local program

Officers from a single Arizona county helped deport more than 26,000 immigrants from the U.S. through a federal-local partnership program that has been roundly criticized as fraught with problems.

Statistics obtained by The Associated Press show that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was responsible for the deportation or forced departure of 26,146 immigrants since 2007.

That's about a quarter of the national total of 115,841 sent out of the U.S. by officers in 64 law enforcement agencies deputized to help enforce immigration laws, some since 2006, under the so-called 287(g) program.

The tens of thousands of immigrant arrests show local officials already have a significant amount of authority to enforce immigration laws and help remove illegal immigrants from the country.

2. Sherrif Joke
Operates all of the jails. His deputies did not arrest 26,000 illegal immigrants. They processed the people arrested by 8 other police agencies in Maricopa County who actually arrested these people. His people account for maybe 10% of those arrests.

5. OK say you are correct
If his deputies arrested just 10% of the 26,000 that's still allot more proportionately then the Feds are doing.

Does that make the feds a "joke" or just the claim that the feds have sealed the border a "joke"?

7. The Feds
Deported over 350,000 last year.

It makes Sheriff Joe a joke because of the fact he focuses so much on illegal immigration that other areas of crime are hurting and slower response time.

8. Federal Border Patrol agents apprehended 724,000 border crossers in FY '08
Of those, 662,000 were Mexicans attempting to enter the U.S. illegally.

3. So lets see
One county in one state managed to arrest enough Illegal aliens to deport 23% (26,146 of the 115,841) Illegal aliens deported since 2007 nation wide.

Looking at numbers I see here I can't see how anyone can argue that the Federal government isn't doing their job. After all, Maricopa County has a population of over 3 million people or roughly 1% of the US but somehow managed to arrest 23% of the Illegal aliens.

How could one claim that the federal government isn't doing it's fair share? <Sarcasm off>

Honestly, the federal government is claiming that immigration is solely a federal responsibility but almost a quarter of the Illegal aliens deported come from a single county? That's not even a single state! What the hell are the Feds doing?

4. Well, for one thing it's likely those people were processed through a Federal program
run by ICE, "Secure Communities". Those people were routed THROUGH there, that's all the "credit" that venue should get.

10. Your figures are WAY off
The 115,841 represents arrests by participating local agencies. That doesn't include arrests and deportations by federal agents. The feds deported 387,000 in FY '09 ALONE, and expect to deport 400,000 this year.

6. And his other areas of crime are hurting
Slower response time to real crimes, clearing 75% of cases without a proper investigation or arrest. One case he closed the case of a rape of 15 year old girl before DNA testing was even complete.

The East Valley Tribune won a Pulitzer Prize for giving in-depth reporting and details on how Arpaio is so focused on the immigration issue that is lax in other areas of crime.

9. Poor reporting. 'Immigrant arrests' is a misnomer
for the apprehension of illegal aliens.
