Schwarzenegger could leave Calif. without budget
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Without a budget resolution in sight, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger hinted Monday that he might not sign a budget before he leaves office next January unless he gets the reforms he wants.

California faces a $19 billion deficit for the fiscal year that began July 1, and Schwarzenegger is demanding pension, tax and spending reforms in the new budget. He said that if the Legislature doesn't give him a budget that meets his expectations, he won't act on it.

"If I don't get what I need, I will not sign it and it could drag on to the next governor," Schwarzenegger told reporters after meeting with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday.

1. Schwarzenegger can leave California any time he likes
and the sooner the better. What an ass! Maybe we will be better off without a budget instead of the one he wants.

4. Exactly, because he'll never do what needs to be done
and that is to call on the legislature to modify Prop 13 to index taxes to overall inflation and to raise taxes on California's fat cats.

I just hope people there are finally starting to figure out that no taxes=no services and everything held by the public auctioned off to pay for essential services until it is all gone.

Well, budget or no, I am one Californian who will be happy to see him not be back.

Until the State Constitution is rewritten or Prop 13 sent to the ash-heap of history, no governor will solve this problem.

16. In California, for budgets, you need 2/3 for control.
So the Democrats do not control the Assembly, which is what it is called in California, for budgets.

33. Honestly...
Edited on Mon Jul-26-10 07:42 PM by Oerdin
I hate to say but Arnold is right in this case. Democrats and Republicans are both acting like fools and year after year they refuse to fix the state's structural deficit. Hard choices must be made and that means there must be big spending cuts and some big tax increases but neither side will budge one inch. If I was in Arnold's position (a lame duck on his way out) I'd likely do the exact same thing and refuse to sign any budget thus shutting down the entire state government and making sure voters got royally pissed off at incumbents of both parties. He's not running again so he has nothing to lose so he might as well force a show down realizing that eventually any politician who actually does want to continue holding office will have to compromise and stop acting like a 3 year old.

My hat is off to him because it needs to be done. The closer it gets to Nov. with the state government shut down the more the incumbents will panic and suddenly a compromise will be reached.

My response to this: Once again the governor fails the state. This is sure to tarnish Whitman's/Republicans' appeal.

41. There is NO way he would need to sign it.
A budget cannot go to his desk without a 2/3 majority in the first place - enough to override any veto. So I fail to understand what he's saying...

It won't have an immediate affect, but later on we may see and end to republicans trying out "conservative" each other, when they realize that those votes may now be in the minority.
