Detroit Free PressA Taylor Police officer was gunned down this morning by a man neighbors in a Taylor apartment complex thought was trying to break into a home, police said
Taylor Corporal Matthew Edwards, 31, was shot multiple times by a 36-year-old Westland man as Edwards and his partner responded to a call about a possible home invasion at the Coppertree Townhomes on Pine Street near Telegraph and Northline roads around 6 a.m. today, Taylor Police said at a news conference late this morning.
Edwards and his partner found the man who matching the description of someone neighbors said was trying to enter the window of an apartment on the 12400 block of Pine, a visibly shaken Cmdr. Dan Crowell said.
"Witnesses told police that Officer Edwards was speaking with the defendant when they saw the defendant pull a gun and shoot Officer Edwards," Crowell said, his voice breaking. "Officer Edwards' partner returned fire, shooting the defendant several times
Police did not identify the suspect, who they said was undergoing surgery at Oakwood Hospital this afternoon. His condition wasn't known.
