Journalism Legend Daniel Schorr Dies At 93
Source: NPR

Daniel Schorr, a longtime senior news analyst for NPR and a veteran Washington journalist who broke major stories at home and abroad during the Cold War and Watergate, has died. He was 93.

Schorr, who once described himself as a "living history book," passed away Friday morning at a Washington hospital. He was able to bring to contemporary news commentary a deep sense of how governmental institutions and players operate, as well as the perspective gained from decades of watching history upfront.

"He could compare presidents from Eisenhower on through, and that gave him historical context for things," said Donald A. Ritchie, Senate historian and author of a book about the Washington press corps. "He had lived it, he had worked it and he had absorbed it. That added a layer to his broadcasting that was hard for somebody his junior to match."

Schorr's 20-year career as a foreign correspondent began in 1946. After serving in U.S. Army intelligence during World War II, he began writing from Western Europe for the Christian Science Monitor and later The New York Times, witnessing postwar reconstruction, the Marshall Plan and the creation of the NATO alliance.

35. RIP, Mr. Schorr. .
I hate to see the old-guard journalists go. They are truly the last vestiges from when the profession had ethics and standards.

Slowly but surely the mantle is being passed to the likes of Fox News.

44. sad news
The most positive thing about his death is that he got to enjoy 93 years on earth with us all. A fully lived life.

Dan was actually friends with Frank Zappa and gave a eulogy for Frank on NPR when Zappa died in 1993. Before Arsenio Hall on Fox, Zappa was putting together a nightly live news show, and was going to feature Dan! Like many Zappa projects, it never came to be.

Didn't Schorr get "Dan Rather'ed" forcing him out of network television? Something offensive to the powers that be, along the lines of the Pentagon Papers or refusing to reveal a source?

56. I hope the young journalists will follow his advice...
<snip>
Only in December 2009 did he switch from using a typewriter to a computer, he said, according his NPR Twitter feed. And he sang at least twice on the air. During a spur-of-the-moment collaboration with musician Frank Zappa at a get-out-the-vote event in Washington, he sang two Gershwin songs, "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "Summertime." And, in depths of the economic downturn of 2008, he reflected on his boyhood in the Depression, and sang a few bars of "Brother Can You Spare a Dime."

"I have found a satisfying home for the evening of my career," he said in 2003. "I no longer pursue scoops, but concentrate on the context and the meaning of things. I interact with journalists a third to half my age who seem to regard me as a walking history book. If asked, I tell them what lessons I have learned over the past 60-odd years. And since there are today more pressures than ever to conform, to avoid rocking the boat, I'm prone to advise: At least once in your lifetime take a risk for a principle you believe in, even if it brings you up against your bosses."

This guy had a pretty good BS meter and could get right to the heart of the matter, he was old school indeed.

He also was great in a minor role he had playing himself in the Michael Douglas movie "The Game".

He's probably involved in a stirring discussion with Cronkite right now, trading WWII stories.

73. NPR covers his friendship with Frank Zappa...
Frank Zappa and NPR’s Daniel Schorr were indeed friends, and at one of his concerts in 1988, he invited Dan to join him onstage. Host Scott Simon pays a final tribute to Daniel Schorr with a remembrance of Schorr's unlikely friendship with rocker Frank Zappa.

74. Saturday mornings on NPR will never be the same

In my groggy stupor on July 10, I had my habit of listening to NPR and waiting for Daniel Schorr's report.
But something struck me strange after I heard the last of his report that morning. I sensed something in his voice, and wondered if he was not well.
He wasn't on the air July 17 and I wondered if I heard the last of Dan. Maybe he's taking vacation, I thought.
So I was quite shocked to learn of Dan's passing this past Friday. The ultimate journalism role model. Puts truth before peace. I remember Daniel Schorr back in the Watergate days. And I looked forward to hearing his spin on the past week's news.

RIP Dan. Condolences to his wife and family.
