Greenpeace ship to survey damage to Gulf
July 20, 2010 - 2:14AM

Environmental group Greenpeace says it will send one of its ships on a three-month expedition to determine the extent of the ecological damage to the Gulf of Mexico from the BP oil spill.

"We all need to know the true extent and nature of this oil catastrophe, as well as the real reasons why this happened, so we can make sure it never happens again," Greenpeace USA executive director Philip Radford said in a statement on Monday.

The group said a Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, would set off next month from Tampa, Florida, to conduct a wide-ranging survey of the Gulf, examining everything from the plankton on the surface to subsurface plumes.

Far from being encouraged by this weekend's news that the ruptured BP oil well had been capped, Greenpeace said: "Tens of millions of gallons of oil have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, compromising the wildlife and ecosystems, destroying the region's fisheries, and affecting the ocean for decades to come."

2. Sea Shepherd has been there for weeks.
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 04:24 PM by tblue
They've been surveying and reporting and conducting a rescue campaign for at least 2 months. http://www.seashepherd.org/gulf-rescue/ Video here: http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-100701-1.html Greenpeace is too hands off for my taste. I stopped giving to them when I realized they don't stop the whaling in the whale sanctuary, they hold up banners and take photos and collect donations. For what? I like an org that's not afraid to get it's hands dirty.

The group said BP 'has made countless mistakes, devoted inadequate resources, and withheld information from and denied access to journalists and the American public.'

6. I admire the fact that Greenpeace doesn't give a shit about who BigOil thinks it is
If someone is messing with the natural order of things Greenpeace will not be shut up.
