4. You have a vested interested in doing so and are not abusing your job
It was wrong when people did it with Joe the Plumber and it is wrong here.

7. Crime of Hacking into Private Citizens Student Loan File
You say you can't see any crime here. Clearly there are a number of potential crimes both state and federal crimes. One could be the crime of illegally without cause or authority scan the files of the president when he was a college student as an employee of that firm. Then there is the illegality of consipracy to commit this crime for the express purpose of divulging the illicitly gained private information to others who do not have a right to have the material. Then there is the possibility that by doing so the miscreant broke state confidentiality laws, and even federal confidentiality laws. The state has a responsibility to maintain privacy in the affairs of private people and the loan applicant has a right to a modicum of confidentialty. I think the felons who committed the act with the express intent of disparaging and making up lies should have his balls put in a vice!

10. Student loan information is extremely personal.
Loan application forms can include information about the family of the student as well as the student. The forms are invasive, intrusive, really awful. You don't go through that kind of financial examination for other personal loans -- at least not in my experience.

11. You're right
and the reason is that providing access to financial aid is not the system's primary goal.

9. because most companies have rules in place behind who may
access records of those one is not related to. They make it abundanty clear to the employee what they can and can't access.

When I worked in insurance about 28 years ago, the company insured famous performers---only select managers had access to their records. The company made it quite clear than under no circumstances was anyone else not on manager level to access those records. Doing so would result in termination. That's pretty clear and that's pretty much SOP in companies like that.

You accessing yours and your wife's records is non sequitur to some joe who works for the company keeping your files invading your privacy just for shits and grins, making copies of what they find to give to god know who.

I take it that that's ok with you, hence you not seeing the issue here?

12. I agree fire them but a criminal charge seems a bit steep...
IMO they would be no criminal investigation if they had looked at Joe Schmoes records.

15. There would be a criminal investigation if they were found out

Regardless of whose records were looked at.

Credit reporting companies have instigated criminal investigations when employees access records without authorization. It's one way to keep confidence in the company's ability to keep records private.

I don't understand why that's hard to understand.

8. stay the fuck out of what doesn't concern you
Obama's student loan information is no one's business except Obama's.

I hope they slap him with a crippling fine that will jam him up for the next 45 years.
