New senator (Carte Goodwin) expected to be the 60th vote to push through jobless extension
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats are set to pick up a crucial vote in the Senate as 36 year old Carte Goodwin becomes the youngest Senator when he takes the oath of office tomorrow to succeed the longest serving one.

Goodwin succeeds the late Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller says Goodwin will be the vote Democrats have been lacking in their bid to break a Republican filibuster and pass an extension of jobless benefits.

The legislation is scheduled for a vote just a few minutes after Goodwin is sworn in.

3. I hope people remember this in November
Who has been fighting for the people and who fights for the rich and the corporations.

7. Good point and I hope
some of our frustrated friends will ease off POTUS a little. Our Dems are really starting to get a helluva lot done.

We need our own boogieman, and that is the Corporation.

5. I like the drama involved

even with our lame media we should get some good exposure from this framing: "minutes after youngest senator takes oldest seat, Democrats come through for the unemployed".

6. When I heard that Obama would be forcefully calling for extension to pass today
I assumed a 60th vote had been found.

8. It's still a stopgap, but one
That will be a blessing and even a lifesaver for many of us. I still want to see a WPA-style public works program.

9. The WPA works project got replaced by the Wall ST works
with the latest banking reform package written for the banking industry.
Where was Obama last week or 2 weeks ago when he was needed to push this bill through..Now that it is obvious that this bill will pass he jumps in there to try and show he is working hard for the middle class...great politics

10. In case you missed it, there was no way in Hell President Obama could have done anything with this
Thanks to the stupid fillibuster rule and the GOP Party of NO the President could have stood on his head nonstop for a month and nothing would have changed. How do you believe President Obama could have done anything to appease the repukes without watering down this bill so much as to make it worthless?

12. How about starting by supporting progressive candidates in the primaries
Instead of the likes of Blanche Lincoln? he aand his surrogates did a lot to shape the Congress we now have, that everyone is whining about and blaming for inaction. Anyway, that minority business never seemed to stop the Republicans from doing what they wanted.

13. Amen.
i have a particular fondness for the CCC; I grew up in the north woods where many CCC works are still in place: fire towers, pine plantations, state park facilities, etc., and my father worked as a crew foreman for several years.
