Obama to call for extension of jobless benefits
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- President Obama will call on Congress to extend benefits for jobless Americans during an appearance in the Rose Garden on Monday morning, a White House official said.

The president is expected to have strong words for Republicans, who he will say have previously supported unemployment extensions under Republican presidents but refuse to offer relief to middle class families today, the official said.

On Saturday, during his weekly radio and internet address, Obama blasted Republicans for blocking efforts to extend the time unemployed Americans can receive government benefits.

"Some Republican leaders actually treat this unemployment insurance as if it's a form of welfare," he said. "They say it discourages folks from looking for work. Well, I've met a lot of folks looking for work these past few years, and I can tell you, I haven't met any Americans who would rather have an unemployment check than a meaningful job that lets you provide for your family."

3. The "K00l K1dz" just LOVE that cliché
I've been hearing it for 34 years --

Carter

Clinton

these days, Obama.

And it never sounds any less stupid.

4. That has to be a problem if it entails saying it's stupid.
Since all of them are Democrats, it seems we are at cross purposes.

13. The cliche is new. The sentiment is not.
EVERY Democratic president, INCLUDING Franklin Roosevelt, has been attacked for being "too conservative".

But the idea that there are structural biases in US law that favor conservatives is beyond them, in spite of the supposed popularity of Marx, who wrote about this phenomenon long before he wrote Capital.

The "k00i k1dz" piss me off because they preen and proclaim that they know better, when they consistently overlook these details. Today we're experiencing an overload of "why can't Obama just give a few orders and have them obeyed?"

Nobody's perfect, not even the Democratic presidents, but the critics have never learned, and there has been NO popular push to change the laws that favor private-enterprise feudalism in politics. But that may change -- after all, we have FINALLY acknowledged the systematic abuse of corporate personhood.

16. Well, getting back to the 3 out of 4 Dem Presidents since FDR and...................
...........how conservative they were. All 3 were so called "new" Democrats, liberal on most (not all) social issues and more conservative on entitlement spending programs. All continued spending on "defense". All would be (by 1970 standards) considered moderate Republicans. These 3 are generally opposed to EXCESSIVE intervention in the private sector (AND forget about the so called healthcare "reform". It'll transfer billions to the ins companies) and FDR initiated the federal intervention on a massive level because at that time especially it was needed. So I'll stand by my statement.

8. It's a little fucking late, ain't it? He should of done this a goddamn..........
...........month ago. What's he gong to say, "shame on you"? As soon as the Republicans "filibustered" this, ALL Dems should have been on TV, radio, internet and bullhorns for christ sake calling the Republicans the evil "Scrooges" that they are. NO, hardly a fucking peep. THIS IS WHY THEY ARE LOSING AND IN TROUBLE.

22. I agree strongly with your game plan above.
While I applaud this effort from our President, I'm left scratching my head as to why this drum is being beaten now, rather than last month.

When the GOP hands us ready-made campaign material by voting to screw the unemployed when the economy is down and unemployment is high, why aren't we screaming it from every rooftop?

10. reading the link:
"Obama also criticized Republicans for what he says is obstruction of policies that would aide small businesses and boost the economy.
"Too often, the Republican leadership in the United States Senate chooses to filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress. And that has very real consequences," Obama said Saturday.
"A lot of small businesses still have trouble getting the loans and capital they need to keep their doors open and hire new workers. So we proposed steps to get them that help: Eliminating capital gains taxes on investments. Establishing a fund for small lenders to help small businesses. Enhancing successful SBA programs that help them access the capital they need," he said."

12. Seems a little transparent to me. With the new senator who'll be the 60th vote taking his seat
tomorrow, Obama suddenly will have strong words on jobless benefits today? So he looks like the strong leader who issues an order & the Congress hops to? Bah.

14. All this fighting for a lousy 90 day extension? This wont even help the 99-ers...
Folks.. we are almost into August... by the time they pass this.. and get it to the States.... (who have top pass their own acceptance laws...) we could be well into October... and the extension only goes until the end of November? Why Bother? This is a band aid on an artery.

Plus.. this doesn't address the 99-ers who are double screwed.

We need a WPA-type jobs program. Minimum $15 an hour (40 hours) and everyone eligible for Medicare.

Instead we spend $436 BILLION a day re-building Afghanistan. Pallets of cash disappearing out of the Kandahar airport... and no one seems to notice.
