US puts Muslim cleric on terror blacklist (Anwar al-Awlaki)
Source: BBC

Washington has added a US-born Muslim cleric linked to al-Qaeda to its terrorism blacklist and imposed financial sanctions on him.

The move would freeze any US assets of Anwar al-Awlaki, prevent him from travelling to the US and bar Americans from sending him money.

Mr al-Awlaki is suspected of helping plan the failed bombing of an airliner over Detroit last Christmas. He is also thought to have exchanged e-mails with an army officer charged with killing 13 people last November at a military base in Texas.

In April the US government authorised his capture or killing and now the US treasury department has placed him on its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

Mark my words, Treasury will do more damage to al Qaeda in the long run than a thousand missile attacks.

9. Are we forgetting something? He was born here, wasn't he? That makes him a citizen, doesn't it?
Is Al Quaeda THAT scary that we have to toss out our criminal justice system to get this guy?

We won two world wars and a global cold war without trashing our liberties to even one percent this extent. This isn't smart at ALL.

10. Like I said
make sure that the missile that takes him out has the Miranda Warning on its nose cone so he can read it before it blows him up that way his constitutional rights aren't violated that way when a judge asks if the POS was given his Miranda Warning it can be truthfully answered yes.

Lighten up Francis.
BTW, when this guy advocated the killing of civillians, he lost his right to be an american and all the rights that go with it, so as far as I'm concerned, fuck em, I won't lose any sleep or fret about his civil rights when a missile blows him to hell where he belongs

16. The US does NOT strip citizenship from anyone advocating death to civilians
Otherwise there'd be quite a few Americans who'd find themselves stripped of their citizenship. Also, how bizarre would it be if the US stripped citizenship from anyone who advocated killing civilians, yet didn't do the same for murderers, rapists, pedophiles etc?

Sorry, but if the US started stripping citizenship from people that'd be the day when people could safely say the US is no longer a democracy...

Not happy with what Bush had done to our Constitution, Obama took it out of the trash and ran it through a shredder.

13. Just a cheap and easy way to build back his al-Qaida street cred. He's worth more alive than dead
Mr. al-Awlaki has been at the center of the communications node for every major terrorist attack on the U.S. including 9/11. If someone happened to have been watching, he was "spiritual advisor" to the Flt. 77 hijackers traveling with them after they entered the U.S. in 2000. Al-Awaki was a principal point of contact for the Flt 77 hijackers, the Ft Hood shooter, the Xmas bomber, and has had communications with thousands of others. He doesn't have to do anything except answer e-mail. No wonder they can't kill him after all these years. Emmanuel Goldstein comes to mind.
