Californians divided on Arizona immigration law
Source: Associated Press

(07-16) 04:00 PDT Sacramento - --

A slight majority of Californians favor Arizona's controversial law that makes illegal immigration a state crime and allows police officers in the Grand Canyon state to question people's immigration status based on "reasonable suspicion," according to a Field Poll released today.

However, the results are close and clearly divided along partisan lines. California voters approve of the law by a 49 to 45 percent margin. A 62 percent majority of Democrats disapprove of the law, while 77 percent of Republicans said they favor the law.

"It's a very divided public here in California," said Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo. Opinions here are much more divided (than national opinions), and I would even say that the splits are wider."

1. Makes one want to give up
There is so much information that proves this law will not do little if anything about "Illegal Immigration" but has a track record of 100% failure, divides the area, creates distrust of law enforcement and the community, adds to profiling, hurts the economy big time. So why are those people falling for the crap? They don't want to hear the truth about it, they live in some dream world that has no time for reality, they are too lazy to learn or their hate is so great they don't care who gets hurt even themselves.

I have constantly asked people to go check out the 9500 Liberty Videos at YouTube or http://9500liberty.com , there are several written accounts as well as that one to show how bad and what a failure this is, but look it is just gaining favor as Brewer, Arpaio, Pearce and others like them keep people hearing and buying their lies. We don't have a strong enough force to counter it.

I only see it coming stronger and another period like Jim Crow which I call Juan Crow coming. It won't be pretty and everyone is going to suffer, but honestly, I don't know what else I can do.

4. The headline should be, Only Republicans Show Strong Support for 1070.
Go read the poll.

2. Juan Cuervo -- alive and well here in the new Mississippi...
I'm from California...

The "slight majority" of sheeple brainwashed by the MSM and right-wing noise machine...

What else could one expect?

What's AMAZING is that it's only a "slight majority" when nearly ALL of the USAmerican Imperial Propaganda machine are spouting bullshit...

3. PS: Even it 99% "approved" in their dim understanding
of this execrable, racist, neo-nazi voter suppression law...

It would still be an execrable, racist, neo-nazi piece of shit law!

Hell, 20% of USAmericans believe the Earth is flat...

5. The corporate media keeps shilling for 1070 and the Democrats
are staying out of it. No wonder people are confused.

6. yep and from my view of it
I don't think people understand how much this is going to affect our whole country. I am amazed that it isn't more of an issue here at DU and don't understand why it is. I know someone will say, "What you want every thread on it?" Which really isn't a good question, because most all threads on this drop fast, gets limited views, usually the same ones commenting and a few who come in an try to create confusion about the post (often with the very stuff we hear from Brewer and her group here in Arizona) so no wonder it is growing. I honestly don't know what to do anymore and am about ready to throw my hands up and say if you want this new Jim Crow then go ahead. I lived in the old Jim Crow and it was bad, but if that is what you think you want, just remember when you find out how bad it is that I tried to warn you.

7. I agree with you that people don't seem to grasp how widely
the consequences of this law and its clones could be felt.

But in my opinion, that's about leadership. People are interested in this topic but only the Republicans are speaking to it, them and the right wing media.

That's no way to handle an issue that concerns the fastest growing demo in the country, either.

8. NO
There is not a split, this poll like so many polls are misleading and seems in most cases to favor the GOP, which is pissing me off. Everyday there are numerous polls coming out. Seems like we are becoming a country of polls which only cover less than 1,000 even being polled. AZ is hurting monetary wise b/c of the boycott. The GOP are only targeting the brown people to the fullest extent, sorta reminds me of history with Hitler, yes the Nazis. The GOP-tea baggers need to look in the mirror, they are the ones who act like nazis.

15. the boycotts are being taken as temporary here in Arizona
The talk I hear is that yeah it might hurt in the short run but the benefits of 1070 will soon balance that out and more will get jobs that the "illegals" are getting. However, that is wrong as everywhere this type law has been tried shows. The lack of putting the real story out there is really taking it's toll and people who wouldn't normally by into it are.

9. Long-run, this is terrible for the GOP.
Latinos will solidify as a Democratic voting group, and the GOP will solidify its position as a white party. In a state like California, there are plenty of white progressives. The right had better be very careful milking short-term advantages - they could seriously hamper themselves down the line. We need a long-term view of things as well as short-term.

11. Latinos are a Democratic voting group right now.
The rest is right wing spin.

12. Yes, they are, but are solidifying as such.
There was a definite opportunity for the GOP to make real inroads, leveraging "social issues." Now that window has mostly closed. I think we'll see more in the range of 80-20 splits, rather than 65-65.

13. And they are being energized to VOTE in greater numbers
Historically, their voting participation has been low. That's changing now. The bigots have shot themselves in the foot by awakening a sleeping giant.

14. The social conservatism is also largely spin, when you think about it.
Social "conservatives" tend to be older voters, not Latinos. Young people across the board are liberal on social issues and we are the youngest demographic in terms of age of voters.
