Judge hears abortion law arguments

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new Nebraska law requiring health screenings for women seeking abortions remains in limbo.

U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp heard arguments Tuesday about whether the law should be allowed to take effect on Thursday as scheduled, but did not issue a ruling. She promised a ruling on Wednesday.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland wants an injunction to block the law while its lawsuit challenging it moves through the courts.

The group says the law could be difficult to comply with and require doctors to give irrelevant information.

2. What's fair for the Male is fair for the Female. Men have to have an exam and..
...are warned about the dangers and "life Killing" that goes with having a Vasectomy.

5. Men should be screened for risk factors indicating if they could have mental or physical problems...
The whole quote:
Men "would be screened for risk factors indicating if they could have mental or physical problems after a" vasectomy.

The bill requires a doctor or other health professional to screen women to determine whether they were pressured into having abortions. Doctors also must assess whether women have risk factors that could lead to mental or physical problems after an abortion.

The bill is unusual, however, in spelling out what doctors must look for. They include any risk factors cited in peer-reviewed journals indexed by two major medical and scientific listing services during the year before a planned abortion. The risks could be "physical, psychological, emotional, demographic, or situational," according to the bill.

Doctors would have to tell patients whether they had any of the risk factors cited in the journals, but they could perform abortions even if risk factors existed.
(clip)Women already undergo an extensive screening for medical problems that might be complicated by an abortion and the procedure isn't performed if the risks are too great, Planned Parenthood officials said. With the new requirements, women could be overwhelmed by a flood of possibly irrelevant information, Stauch said.
