3. Just another dirty corrupt republican
"GEORGE STEINBRENNER, 1989
Indicted on 14 criminal counts on April 5, 1974, the owner of the New York Yankees plead guilty to obstruction of justice and conspiring to make illegal contributions to President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign. Steinbrenner, a major Republican donor, allegedly knew the money he was donating was not going through regular election procedures. Not wanting to appear soft on crime, President Ronald Reagan would only pardon Steinbrenner if the Yankees' owner admitted to the crime."

Goodbye George....the good and the bad. You gave me some of the greatest moments of my childhood, and tonight, at the All-Star Game, the Yankees will do you proud.

14. Kind of appropriate he died on the day of the All Star game
Well you bought a helluva team for a long time with the Yankees. As a small market baseball fan I believe you were a big part of ruining baseball cities like Pittsburgh but that was business unfortunately and I guess we couldn't stay stuck in different age.

RIP George.

12. He was a very unlikable person.
Somehow, while he was in retirement, he resuscitated his image.

I still think he was an unlikeable person.

16. He was George. He was good and bad, and awful and wonderful.
He resurrected the greatest baseball team ever, nearly drove it into the ground, then resurrected it again....

A very complex man who truly loved the game. He will be missed.

25. He destroyed the shipbuilding industry in Lorain, Ohio.
He starved the union employees during a strike, until they agreed to accept every wage and benefit concession that he demanded. When they finally buckled, and accepted, he said "FUCK YOU", and shut the whole shipyard down, fired everyone, and moved everything to Tampa.

A real peach.

Steinbrenner's family escaped the estate tax in this final year of the Bush tax cut.

"You've been in something of a slump the past decade or so..."

He'll likely replace him with a big dollar free agent from the Angels.

30. How very sad and at the same time how typical of him
That he should pass on the day of the All Star game, still trying to be bigger than the game itself. Sorry to hear of his passing but in all fairness I have to say that he singlehandedly did more to ruin the game of baseball than anyone I know of. The outrageous salaries paid by him caused the other owners to pay more just to keep up and as a result brought the cost of going to a game beyond the means of most families. The cost of a ticket in 1973 when he became majority owner was $4 and today the cost is $80. While the players have a share of the blame for the state of today's game, George was the main culprit. His fans applauded his win-at-all-costs style. His detractors blamed him for spiraling salaries and wrecking baseball's competitive balance. Consider this: Over the years the Yankees spent $1.8 billion on free agent salaries more than double the next closest team.

Could it be argued that Steinbrenner caused the destruction of a shrine of baseball?

32. You could hate him at times (I did), but he was a sports team owner
and he wanted his team to win, childlike, yes, but also quite human in the end.

Compare him with the faceless, nameless executives who run up the score for a few years and then leave, and George starts to look a little better. You can call him a lot of names, but quick-buck artist wasn't one of them.

And when you get under the surface a little more, you see that he was there for the players in a way that few owners ever are. After their careers were over and their personal lives went into tailspins. Ask Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden what they think of George.

As for the Yankees "ruining" baseball via high salaries, too simplistic. There is no salary cap in baseball, so the richer teams have been outperforming the less wealthy teams for many years. No team has repeated in the World Series since 2000, and during that time the Diamondbacks, Angels, Marlins, White Sox, Cardinals, Phillies and Red Sox have all won.

As for the Stadium getting torn down, that hurt. But at least he only moved across the street. Could've been much worse (in the 80's, George was threatening to bolt to New Jersey).
