Confidence in Obama reaches new low, Washington Post-ABC News poll finds
Source: Washington Post

Public confidence in President Obama has hit a new low, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Four months before midterm elections that will define the second half of his term, nearly six in 10 voters say they lack faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country, and a clear majority once again disapproves of how he is dealing with the economy.

Regard for Obama is still higher than it is for members of Congress, but the gap has narrowed. About seven in 10 registered voters say they lack confidence in Democratic lawmakers and a similar proportion say so of Republican lawmakers.

Overall, more than a third of voters polled -- 36 percent -- say they have no confidence or only some confidence in the president, congressional Democrats and congressional Republicans. Among independents, this disillusionment is higher still. About two-thirds of all voters say they are dissatisfied with or angry about the way the federal government is working.

Such broad negative sentiments have spurred a potent anti-incumbent mood. Just 26 percent of registered voters say they are inclined to support their representative in the House this fall; 62 percent are inclined to look for someone new.

3. Thank Wall Street Democrats for this. Mort Zuckerman on

Bloomberg News:: Obama is incompetent.

About 6 weeks ago Fox started a meme(esp. Business Reporters)
"Obama is incompetent".

I warned at that time, the Dems had to push back on this hard.

"Confidence in Obama reaches new low, Washington Post-ABC News poll finds gleefully."

They seem barely able to contain their joy at reporting polls like this.

5. This may just be more of the same...
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 08:26 AM by onpatrol98
I think many Americans are simply disgusted overall.

Me personally, I have a lack of faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country.

But, I also lack faith in any other politician at the moment. One of my sister's classmates (28 years old), just lost a leg in Afghanistan. The economy is in the tank. Corporations (Pharmaceutical companies, Banks, Oil Companies, etc) seem to be running the government and making decisions for us.

I'm not sure I think any other president would have done any better at this moment. The last President I did have faith in was Bill Clinton...but, wait...didn't he give us NAFTA?

I think many Americans are just tired. Everyone knows someone looking for a job. Many of us that are working, don't know if it will be us tomorrow. Insurance rates are going up. What passes for my insurance was already costing me more than I wanted to pay?

I'm just tired. I think many others are feeling the same way. It may be less about Obama and just basic uneasiness and unhappiness about the current state of affairs.

49. It took a lot of balls for him to choose a champagne squadrom,
instead of combat duty in Vietnam.

Being AWOL was a lot of balls too, as was throwing spitballs in the back of his classroom.

Pulling strings to condemn property to get a ballpark built, lots of balls.

Running a mini Enron scheme, complete with Arthur Anderson, and bilking the shareholders of Harken Energy out of $10 million--oh yeah, balls galore.

Searching for oil in Bahrain and failing to find it, most ballsy.

I'll give him credit though for freaking out so much that he finally abandoned his profoundly stupid ideology, and turned his back on the dumbass Cheney. Too little, too late. But at least he did that much.

44. If we DO lurch to the right, it is because the center right has now been redefined as left.
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 11:38 AM by Bonobo
Just like Clinton, Obama has caused the most centrist, conservative positions to be defined as "left", thus throwing everyone on the true left entirely off the radar.

Same fucking thing happened with Clinton.

This country has gone so far right, that "center dems" these days are little more than Reagan Republicans.

13. Americans like strong presidents, not weak "bipartisan" ones
FDR: strong, bold, made no apologies for standing up for the average American -- reelected three times, including that all-important first reelection despite the U.S. still gripped by the Great Depression

Truman: firm, resolute, no-nonsense -- reelected

Ike: firm, went against his own GOP's most greedy members -- reelected

LBJ: had no idea what he was doing with the Vietnam War, gave up

Nixon: a Republican who vowed to end the war and who adopted progressive economic policies -- reelected

Carter: projected meekness, lost reelection

Reagan: full of total crap and the beginning of the end for America, but did project an image of strength -- reelected

Bush I: also projected meekness, lost reelection

Clinton: projected strength through political savvy and fending off clumsy GOP political attacks -- reelected

Bush II: an exception. Did not project strength and projected total cluelessness, but reelected thanks to the weak campaign by his rival, the new corporate media, and an increasingly dumbed-down electorate

Obama: projecting middling "bipartisanship" all over the place; America wanted a bold new FDR-type, but are getting a corporate Democrat who apparently thinks the public yearns for corporate-friendly bipartisan policies; also has apparently forgotten that America put the Democrats in the majority for a reason

69. how do you define "far left?"
nixon democrats?

those who would support nixon-levels of taxation for the rich?

decriminalization of mj?

or eisenhower democrats?

those who support public service jobs to build infrastructure, like the interstate hwy system?

or Truman democrats?

those who support civil rights in the military, no matter what the color of someone's skin or his or her sexual orientation?

or Kennedy democrat?

who supported (and brought forth) unemployment insurance?

it's really useless to throw around phrases like "far left" without defining what that means.

what does the "far left" support that you don't? what are your stands on various policy issues?

rather than insult liberals, put up or shut up.

that the country wanted more push back against the neocons who almost destroyed us in the last administration. This failure to hold them accountable weakens the public's view. Huge mistake, and now the Dems will pay dearly in Nov. I still believe they won't take control of either House, but if he had trouble before with his "weak" agenda he ain't gonna get shit done after Nov. One term President, quite possible. Goodbye EFCA, immigration reform and if he doesn't get his ass in gear, maybe financial "reform" too. Such a huge waste, it could and SHOULD have been better than this.

26. Interesting how the article is spun ...
The article indicates that "nearly 60%" lack confidence in President Obama, when the actual number is 58%. They then attempt to link President Obama to Congressional democrats' disfavor <58%-President Obama, 68%-Congressional democrats> as if the numbers are "nearly" the same. 10 points is a signifant difference. But the kicker is they indicate that Congressional Democrats and Republicans have "similar" numbers ... and thus, the article reads that President Obama's disfavorable numbers are nearly the same as those of the republics. This is completely not true; there is a heck of a difference between 58% and 72% .

Spin media, spin.

36. No, this is lousy news
But not unexpected. People voted for Obama because they wanted to take the country in a new direction. That isn't happening, and people are starting to realize that. It would be one thing if we saw Obama really trying, but he isn't. All I'm hearing from him lately is a lot of Bush-like talk on Afghanistan. If I wanted more endless war, I would have voted Republican. We can no longer afford these wars. What kind of change is it when we can't even pull ourselves out of two useless conflicts or get minimal regulation passed on oil and financial companies? Those who tortured and ruined the country are walking around free, and people who take video of the devastation of the gulf risk felony charges. This isn't change. It's more of the same fascist bullshit.

And believe me, I wish it wasn't.

43. People are angry and scared.
Who doesn't know at least one person who is not struggling? That is, if they are not struggling themselves. I'm fortunate enough to have held on to my job for now, next month, next year......who knows?

I have friends and acquaintances who have lost jobs, some even over a year ago, and still can't find anything. One of my best friends worked for 22 years for one of the top 10 law firms in NYC. She lost her job in May last year. She received her last unemployment check last week. She's going to have to tap into her savings. When those run out, what is she going to do?

The Democrats are in charge. They have the WH and both houses in Congress. Who do you think that the average person is going to blame?

50. The Gulf Coast is being decimated...
... Obama is doing nothing, and I just read that my "Democratic" senator recently voted to keep taxpayer subsidies going to the oil and gas industry so that they can continue to become even more obscenely rich destroying the planet, with a helping hand from the taxpayers. Sure does make it tough to keep the faith.

58. I'm heart broken about the Gulf coast.

My second state is FL (the Palm Beach area) and people are very concerned about the spill. Actually, "concerned" is an understatement. They are worried sick and furious that more is not being done to cleanup the mess. My friends who spend the month of August in the Keys every year are doubly concerned because there was a 4 mile plume near Marathon Key. The ecosystem of the Keys is so fragile that I cringe to think what will happen to the FL lobster and all the other critters in the area if the spill hitches a ride with the Loop Current.

:-(

51. The DLC is going to spend $30 Million to get out the vote...
..wouldn't it be easier to govern as promised in the last campaign and support Main Street instead of Wall Street?

64. He could fix this overnight by standing up for Social Security.
Polls show that any elected official who supports NOT touching SS are in the 60%-70% range meaning that the issue garners support across political lines.

He needs to come out strongly very soon against the recommendations of Social Security enemies, Alan Simpson and Pete Peterson. If he does not, if he thinks waiting until after the election will keep the issue off the table for November, someone is giving him very bad advice.

Every political analyst I have read says that standing up for Social Security is a winner.

Let's hope someone can explain this to him before it's too late.

75. The media needs a real contest to sell itself. If there wasn't bad news they'd create it.

If people disapprove of Obama's performance it doesn't mean they prefer repubs. Progressives think he is not progressive enough and conservatives think he is too progressive. That makes up the poll numbers.
