Activist Cindy Sheehan Cleared of DC Protest Charge
Updated: Monday, 12 Jul 2010, 11:47 PM EDT

WASHINGTON - Activist Cindy Sheehan has been cleared of a charge stemming from a protest in front the White House.

After a trial in D.C. Superior Court on Monday, Judge Robert E. Morin found Sheehan not guilty of crossing a police line during an anti-war protest in March.

A prosecutor showed a video of demonstrators lying on the White House sidewalk with mock coffins and Sheehan crossing a toppled police barrier. U.S. Park Police are heard warning protesters that their permit had been revoked.

Defense attorney Mark Goldstone says the judge told the court that Sheehan was acquitted because she crossed the barrier after it was knocked down.

2. There should be NO MORE barriers at Washington protests
Or, if there are, more of them should be gently knocked over.

We need something different in this whole dynamic.

Polite protests conducted on police terms never achieve anything.

6. Great news and a thank you to the judge for upholding
people's right to protest.

I am happy for Cindy. She is wonderful. Just as she always was. We need thousands more like her to help scare the hell out of our elected representatives who apparently don't worry too much about what we think.

44. the judge convicted some of the protestors.
the right to protest was never at issue in this case. the judge simply held that you cannot convict anyone for crossing a police line IF the line has previously been knocked down and remained down.

10. Nothing against her protests to which she has a right, BUT
why doesn't she lay down in front of the republican senator's offices? Why doesn't she complain about them. Go after the ones who are really pushing for all that WAR MONEY going to the republican companies in defense. But then I suppose since the Democrats aren't as scary it is better to protest them. Most people are afraid of republicans, never know what they'll do, look at Bachman urging people to attack the Dem representatives, Palin putting the Democrats in her ""CROSSHAIRS"" and the republicans who are threatening to kill the president. Yeah I guess the republicans are a hate filled violent bunch and should be steered clear of.

11. So you're only against wars when Republicans do it?
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 07:52 AM by JoeyT
That seems to be a pretty common sentiment, but people usually don't come right out and admit it.

Edited to add: And of course she protested the hell out of Republicans. To claim she didn't and doesn't is pretty dishonest.
But now the CiC isn't a Republican, so now she's going to protest warmongering Ds. That's what happens when people believe in a cause.

31. Cindy, afraid of Republicans? You must not have been around
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 02:10 PM by sabrina 1
when Cindy, at a time when it was considered treason to oppose Bush's wars, was one of the first brave mothers of a dead soldier to speak out against the Iraq War. For that she was viciously attacked by the Right.

And it was Cindy who DID literally 'lie down' right outside Bush's Ranch with no Cattle and drew enough negative media attention to him, FINALLY, that she is credited with contributing to his falling support even among Republicans. I believe she has received many death threats from the right for her outspoken and fearless criticism of the Bush Administration.

She went to the Capitol Bldg in what was to be a silent protest at a Bush SOTU address. She was arrested for simply being there.

What you are missing is that some people put their country before any political party. Cindy is being consistent, she hasn't changed her position on these wars.

Some people appear to have backed away from their anti-war positions since a Democrat was elected. Cindy remains opposed to both wars and doesn't see a difference in killing people for profit when the letter 'R' changes to the letter 'D'.

But to imply that she is afraid of Republicans is laughable. That is how we all came to know and respect her, for being one of the few who dared to stand up when most of the country, the press, Congress and many citizens were afraid to speak out.

35. To suggest that Cindy Sheehan, of all people, is a coward,
and to essentially lie about her in order to do it, has got to be one of the most despicable things I've ever seen posted here.

It is especially rich coming from a keyboard warrior who doesn't have the nads to speak truth to power within his own party.

and nearly as bad to pretend we aren't in power and hold the strings to these wars or that our own pols aren't looking out for MIC interests in their states and districts.

42. In March, 2010, the CIC was not a Republican Senator and Democrats controlled Congress.
So, I'm guessing that's why. in March 2010, Sheehan was not conducting a war protest at the office of a Republican Senator.

As you know, when a Republican was President, she directed her war protests at him. She's anti-war, not anti Dem or anti Republican.

For some, a principle like peace actually supersedes Party labels and partisan politics. Go figure.
