Breaking News: Cornered Moat 'Holding A Gun To His Head'
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 03:23 PM by IScreamSundays
Source: Sky News

Rob Cole, Sky News Online
Police are in a confrontation with wanted fugitive Raoul Moat and he is holding a gun to his head, Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt says.
"A man matching Moat's description is on the riverbank and police marksmen are negotiating with him," said Brunt.
"Police are in confrontation with the suspect and I am told he is holding a gun to his head."
A police tweet confirmed: "A man who fits the description of Raoul Thomas Moat located in the riverbank area in the vicinity of Rothbury. Police currently negotiating."
Sky News correspondent James Matthews, close to the scene, said he could hear police negotiators talking to the suspect and addressing him as "Raoul".

8. I don't know, but I'm not sure local stories from the UK
really fit the Late Breaking News category. Especially if you don't give us a clue about why we should be especially interested in the story.

11. A lot of people are aware of it and interested.
it may not be particularly interesting from the perspective of the US gun-culture, where a raging, steroid fueled loonie with a vendetta and a gun can't make the back page of the paper until he or she slaughters at least a dozen, but it is pretty major goings-on in the UK. It also points to some interesting comparisons in national attitudes.

It also seems to be exposing a wee bit of 'who cares, it ain't amurika' here and there . . .

If you're not interested, why bother reading it and commenting?

19. He's not just got any old vendetta, it's a vendetta against the police
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 06:28 PM by Turborama
An armed man who's shot 3 (including one policeman) running around the countryside of (unarmed) England for a week looking for cops to kill and who is now surrounded by 250 armed police is quite big news, wherever you come from.

Currently, I don't live in either the UK or the US and I find this story interesting.

Maybe there should be two forums called Late Breaking American News and Late Breaking International News?

Wait... hang on... that sort of news divide is what CNN are doing with CNN America & CNN International and it only serves to assist in keeping the American populous ignorant of what else is happening around the world.

12. I know what you mean.
Ask the average person here about BP in the Gulf and they don't know what you're talking about. Its your Gulf : not theirs.

Now the match betwen Spain and Holland on Sunday is a totally different matter.

14. Brooker's doing updates via twitter
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 04:52 PM by ikri
Charlie Brooker's Twitter Feed

The whole thing is quite surreal, he's been surrounded by police for 4 hours, the media are interviewing pretty much anyone in the area now, we've had interviews done via cell phones with someone trapped in a nearby house and now former footballer and current lunatic Paul Gascoigne has turned up to give Moat some chicken.

The police are getting pretty good at gurning for the camera though

18. Classic quote in Guardian article about Gascoigne turning up with chicken & beer
Paul Gascoigne offers support to 'good friend' Raoul Moat

Former England footballer, 43, arrives in Rothbury as armed police are locked in a stand-off with Raoul Moat

=snip=

Talking to Metro Radio, the 43-year-old appeared to suggest he had brought Moat, 37, a "can of lager, some chicken, a mobile phone and something to keep warm".

Gascoigne added: "He is willing to give in now. I just want to give him some therapy and say 'come on Moaty, it's Gazza'.

"He is all right – simple as that – and I am willing to help him. I have come all the way from Newcastle to Rothbury to find him, have a chat with him."

=snip=

Gascoigne's agent, Kenny Shepherd, said: "He's doing what? I am sitting having an evening meal in Majorca. I'm speechless."

30. The guy was desperate for "suicide by cop" but failed and only achieved "suicide"
Remind me again why we should be sympathetic?

31. Don't remember anyone asking anyone to be sympathetic, but
i would suggest it is because he is another human being!

i am sympathetic towards his victims but also to him. I think the whole thing is a tragedy, his life spiralled out of his control and he lost everything. I think people can sympathise with such a tragic figure without condoning what he did.

Also, the suicide by cop take on it i don;t think i agree with. He was talking with the police for 7 hours prior to them tasaring him. I think its a police fuck up!

He was angry at the world, wanted to die, but didn't have the nerve just to take himself out. So he killed one person, wounded 2 more, & ended up dead. Whio didn't see that coming?
