National Public Radio is changing its name to NPR
Source: Washington Post

No need for formalities here: National Public Radio now says it wants to be known simply as NPR.

So the Washington-based organization has quietly changed its name to its familiar initials. Much like the corporate names KFC or AT&T, the initials now stand for the initials.

. . .

Hence: "NPR is more modern, streamlined," says Vivian Schiller, NPR's chief executive. She points to other "re-brandings" by media organizations, such as Cable News Network, which has been plain old CNN for years.

NPR hasn't formally announced the change. But it has told its staff and some 900 affiliated stations in recent months to use only the initials on the air or online.

All those GOPer NPR board members probably hate the idea they are affiliated with anything to do with the common good of the public. Gets their knickers in a twist at just the thought of it. That P in NPR, nope, doesn't stand for public. NPR are just initials.

1. That's because they've become "New Presstitutes for Republicans"
...or "News Prostitutes for Republicans."

Take your choice...

10. There's KKFI (90.1 FM)
http://www.kkfi.org/

About KKFI
Started in 1988, KKFI has been the Kansas City area’s independent, noncommercial community radio station for more than two decades now. The KKFI studios have been in 4 different locations in that time, all in the Westport area. We are fortunate to have a license to operate a 100,000-watt transmitter, the most powerful allowed by FCC regulations.

Mission Statement
We seek to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals and groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.

I listen to such programs as "Democracy Now" and its diverse music programs...

13. And also WGDR
With a power output of 920 watts, carrying Democracy Now, Free Speech Radio News, BBC World News, WINGS (Women's International News Gathering Service), and lots of locally produced stuff -- music, poetry, movie reviews, call-in shows, etc.
Stream it at www.wgdr.org

Vermont Public Radio is too chickenshit to carry Democracy Now in spite of repeated calls for them to do it.

25. Yep...
I don't listen to NPR unless I'm traveling, but when I do tune in I have noticed that Neal Conan is always chomping at the bit to defend right-wingers, tea-baggers, and Republicans of all stripes. What a weasel.

3. Don't care anymore, one time I did......now I don't even turn them on.
Neal Conan is a putz.....just can not deal with him anymore. I do still listen to A Prairie Home Companion, Michael Feldman's Wha da'ya Know, and the Car Guys on NPR. My Wisconsin Public Radio local voices are the best in the business.....especially Kathleen Dunn....my favorite.

31. Diane Rehm is refreshing
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 01:12 PM by ProudDad
because even though her Rola-dex has way too many AEI and Wall St. Journal names in it...

She occasionally asks the NEXT QUESTION that almost NO other interviewer will ask. Of course, this morning when she asked the next question ("Who is responsible for people being all upset about the deficit when there aren't any jobs? Who's stoking the anti-deficit fire") all 3 of her "reporters" avoided the answer. But at least she asked the question!

Not to mention BP (really, I would prefer not to HAVE to mention BP).

Next thing we know, our country will change its name to simply 'USA.'

To me, it's the same programing for two types of people: Elderly people, and upper-middle class people.

I stopped listening to radio because urban radio sucks and NPR is not a alternative to me.

32. At least they've recognized reality.
They are not national. They are imperial.
They are not public. They are bought by the highest contributors.
And as for radio? That's the only thing they remain.
I have no sympathy. I hope their times and contacts with real citizens become more strained as they keep favoring the interests of corporations.

How about ICR
Imperialist Corporate Radio?
